Once upon a time, in the ancient land of Japan, there lived a geisha named Mikako. She was very well-known throughout her village and her beauty was matched only by her kindness. She lived in a house with several other girls and was a favorite among the customers.

Yet, despite all this, she was terribly lonely. No matter how hard she tried she couldn't truly connect with the other girls, who were constantly busy with their duties, nor any of the customers, who only saw her as entertainment.

The only ones she felt close to were the birds that congregated in the forest near the house. Whenever she could she would sneak away to the garden and feed the birds bread leftover from meals. The grateful animals waited in the trees then happily gathered at her feet when they saw her approaching. She would sit and chat with them like one would with old friends, pouring out her heart to them and revealing things she would never tell another soul.

One day, as she fed her little friends Mikako noticed a dove with an injured wing. The poor creature was trying its best to peck at any food that fell in front of it but it would quickly be driven away by the healthier birds.

Mikako felt pity for the dove and gently scooped it up in her hands. She brought it to her room and made a small nest of warm, soft cloths and began nursing it back to health. She carefully bandaged the wing and would bring it food and water and softly sing it to sleep at night.

Several days later Mikako discovered that her dove's wing had healed. She happily brought it to the edge of the forest to release it. As she tossed the dove into the air she was suddenly blinded by a flash of light. When the light subsided the most handsome man she had ever beheld stood before her.

Taking her hands in his he said "I am Eiji the dove prince. For so long I have witnessed your kindness and felt your loneliness. You shared with me your secrets, your dreams and your fears. I believe I have fallen in love with you, Mikako, and wish to make you my wife."

Mikako felt her face flush at the Eiji's words and she happily accepted. Never before had any man proclaimed his love for her. Grabbing his hand, she pulled him back to the house and excitedly told her sisters the news. The other girls were thrilled and congratulated their sister on her newfound love.

But this happiness would not last for long.

As the weeks went on Mikako became neglectful of her duties, often abandoning them to spend her time with Eiji. When other women would greet them or even simply pass by, Mikako would glower at them and grip tightly to his arm. He was terribly uncomfortable with this but said nothing believing she would stop once she grew more accustomed to being in public with him. After all, she had never been in a true relationship before.

Over time Mikako became more and more violent with other women. Not only at strangers but her own friends at the house. She would shove them, pull their hair and even hurl stones at them if they so much as looked in Eiji's direction.

Seeing this, Eiji pulled her aside. "You must stop this, Mikako! I love you and only you! No other shall have my heart! Bring back the kind girl I fell in love with or else I will have no choice but to leave you."

Mikako immediately began sobbing and begged for his forgiveness. Eiji gently brushed away her tears and embraced her. Perhaps now they could finally begin their life together.

One day the geisha house was having its annual tea ceremony. Hundreds of guests came to watch and take part including Eiji and Mikako. As they sat in a circle they watched Hitomi, a lovely young girl Mikako had known throughout childhood, as she carefully mixed and poured the tea. When she passed a cup to Eiji her fingers accidentally brushed against his making her blush. Mikako noticed this and her heart burned with jealousy and hate.

That evening, Hitomi found a note on her pillow instructing her to visit the small abandoned shrine that lay deep within the forest later that night. Curious, she waited until everyone had gone to sleep and sneaked out of the house with her lantern. As she neared the shrine, Mikako emerged from behind a tree. Angrily she vehemently accused the girl of trying to flirt with her beloved Eiji.

Shocked and saddened by her friend's accusations Hitomi adamantly denied she would do such a thing. She was glad for Mikako and wished her nothing but good fortune for them both.

Mikako became enraged at Hitomi's refusal to admit her guilt. Taking out a knife hidden in her sleeve she stabbed the poor girl until her screams were silenced forever. Mikako buried her in a deep pit and threw the knife into a thicket of brambles. Thinking her heinous crime had gone unnoticed, she brushed herself off and crept back to the house.

The next morning Eiji approached Mikako. "The time as come for us to finally be married. Tonight is the night of the full moon and my magic will be strong enough to take you with me to my kingdom. Meet me at the center of the forest tonight at midnight and I will take you to your destiny."

Mikako was ecstatic! She quickly ran inside to pack and met a few of the other girls. Before she could tell them the joyous news one of them, Naomi, asked her if she had seen or heard from Hitomi. Mikako denied knowing anything, annoyed that Hitomi was trying to steal her thunder even in death. No matter. Soon she would be a princess and leave all her troubles behind.

As instructed, Mikako waited for her beloved in a clearing at the center of the forest that night dressed in her finest kimono. The same forest where she had mercilessly murdered her friend only twenty-four hours earlier. But that was the last thing on her mind now. It was almost midnight and there was no sign of her prince anywhere.

Suddenly, she saw Eiji's glowing form gliding between the trees. Forgetting her belongings, Mikako ran to him with arms outstretched. But instead of embracing her new husband her body went through his as if he were made of mist! With a cry of surprise Mikako found herself falling into darkness before landing on something hard, fracturing her back.

Unable to move anything but her eyes she looked up at Eiji who stood at the edge of the pit staring at her sadly. He said nothing but pointed his finger down at something before fading away into the moonlight. Mikako followed the direction he had shown her and saw Hitomi's corpse laying next to her. Unable to move or even scream, Mikako could only stare into Hitomi's lifeless eyes forever.
