My name is Fibromyalgia. And I will hurt you.

I will take from you everything you love. I will steal your dreams, your time, your abilities. I will steal your joy, your peace, your hope. I will pin you to your bed with pain. I will render you unable to sleep. I will render you unable to wake up. I will have you doubled over, keeling over, feeling worked over. You will know someone has beaten you. That someone is me.

I will give you more pain than you knew was possible. I will give you more kinds of pain than you knew were possible. I will invade every area of your life, and every part of your body. I will make myself felt in all of your systems. I will be there at every level of your being. You have never known sickness like this before. You will never know health again.

You will never forget me, not even in dreams. Through your sleep, you will feel the pain. You will wake from nightmares; and face me. I will make you sleep when it pleases me. I will withhold sleep from you when I wish. You will often need that which you cannot have.

I will make you stumble when you walk, fumble when you grasp, draw back when you reach out. I will make you stammer when you speak, struggle to think, fail to remember. I will fill your joints with fire, and your head with fog. I will turn you into a broken doll.

I can keep you away from your family and friends. I can keep you away from the outside world. I can keep you from ever having a contribution to make to society. I can keep you from forming relationships, enjoying hobbies, having a purpose. I can lock you up until your life contains only me.

I will steal your quality of life. I can take away the source of your self-worth and leave you grasping at shreds. I can make you feel useless. I can make you feel worse than useless; a burden on those around you. I can make you wish for death. I have already driven others to death.

I am invisible. Nobody can see me, or see the effects on your body. Few if any will care to understand me. You will feel very alone, very misunderstood, very judged. Others may call you a liar, lazy, delusional, gullible, misdiagnosed. Even those who sympathize may find their limits, as I break you down more and more, without end.

Chronic muscle pain; fatigue; swollen joints; cognitive and memory problems; insomnia; morning stiffness; muscle spasms; tightness in the muscles; jaw and facial tenderness; flu-like symptoms; numbness or tingling of extremities; headaches; restless legs syndrome; vertigo; double vision; irritable bowel syndrome; irritable bladder syndrome; painful menstrual periods; hypersensitivity to noise, odors, bright light or temperature; tinnitis; dry mouth and eyes; skin sensitivity and rashes; coordination problems; depression; anxiety.
