The Familiar

I was 11 when i saw that strange lady calling me from the woods. She wore a black dress and had flowing long hair that fell on her back, like a waterfall made of pure night. She called my name, and smiled at me like i was a long lost friend. I tried to get close, as the innocent child i was, i knew no fear. But then, another voice called my name, and i felt a strong grasp on my arm. It was my mother, terrified. She carried me back home in her arms, and i could only see the black lady flicker like a shadow disappearing in the sun, and sinking into the trees.

After that day, i spent most of my time at the woods. I went back there everyday, crossed the river through a fallen log, climbed the trees, collected leaves, even made myself some sort of den inside a big hole in a tree. But, despite my efforts, i've never been able to see the black lady again. She became my obsession, and i started to wonder if all that vision was nothing but a dream. I sat in the forest day by day, and drew the animals and the plants in the notebook that i always carried in my small travels. I saw the forest turn orange with shades of red during autumn, and become dead silent and white during winter, but nothing ever was as black as the hair from the misterious lady that called me.

"There's a monster in the woods", they said. "Don't ever go in there". But i did. Oh, i did so many times. I loved the smell, the sounds, the animals of the forest. I even spent some nights at my hideout in the tree, watching the stars cross the sky. I wasn't scared. I wanted the monster to meet me once again. To give me answers, and let me touch her hair, and play with her dress. I waited.

And then, finally, i met her. She was passing by, collecting some mushrooms. I saw her, while half asleep on the forest floor, in a hot summer day. She wore different clothes, and looked even prettier, but sure, it was her. I muttered a noise while trying to get up, and she looked back at me. Her eyes were purely red, and her lipstick, black. She seemed surprised. She called my name once again. She said she's been waiting for me all this time, called me precious, and kissed my cheeks.

She said she knew i'd come back to her, ever since i died, long before. I didn't understand at first, but then, i was suddenly hit by a wave of memories. It was her. I was her familiar. And she was a witch.
I remember being a black cat, and then a deer with glowing horns, and then a crow. I died and came back so many times, but now, i was a human child, and she couldn't find me. We were so close, and that was i missed her so badly, too.

Legends say that once a witch bonds with an animal, this animal becomes hers forever. The familiar's soul cannot disappear while the witch is alive. And, in return, she shares some of her magic with it. If the animal dies, it shall come back in many different forms, but the soul remaisn bonded, and it will always come back."

They say there's a monster in the forest. And i could not love it more.
