Every Story Begins Somewhere:

I was born in the world of Etheirys as a very talented mage. I was one of the very few beings with the ability called “Soul Sight’ and as such was chosen to fill the seat of Emet-Selch on the Convocation of Fourteen. A group of so-called guardians that looked after daily life in Etheirys and resided in the great city of Amaurot. Not that really cared for such things back then. In fact, I had no intention of ever becoming the next Emet-Selch. If it wasn’t for my dear friends: Hythlodaeus, who went on to become the Chief of the Bureau of Architect, and our friend and fellow Convocation member “Azem”(Both chronic morning people, to my utter dismay), I would never taken the position. Originally Hythlodaeus was meant to be appointed but declined and nominated me in his stead. An attempt to give me eternal stomach ulcers, I am sure. The words “Hades would make a better fit, as his skills far exceed my own.” Sealed my fate.

After becoming “Emet-Selch” and bailing my friend Azem out of every trouble imaginable (Who in the seven hells runs into an active volcano?) and managing my Convocation duties, things seemed peaceful for the most part. My friends and I went about or lives, making our world better. Slowly building toward perfections. That is until one day, fate took a turn.

One of our members, Fandaniel, announced his plan to return to the source. His life purpose fulfilled in his eyes, we rejoiced that he was finally deciding to rest. However, celebrating would have to wait for myself. I was task in finding his replacement, and I was as instructed to bring the ever-cheerful Hythlodaeus along with me to meet a candidate named Hermes.

Hermes was an overseer of creation of different species that would go to inhabit Etheirys. He was mostly responsible for making creatures that were able to fly and was guilty of favoring their lives over their designs. However quirky I thought him, he was the perfect candidate to become the next Fandaniel as his understanding of the flow of Aether was beyond even my own (Not that I would ever actually admit this to anyone of course).

The strange part is, while visiting Hermes, I was left with a rather sizable gap in my memory. From my understanding, and Venat’s story later, I was exposed to a certain relic that wipes the mind of those within range. Apparently, Hermes used it often for creations that, for lack of better terms, didn’t meet our temperament protocols. He would revert them back to their basics and then attempt to reprogram them for better use. After all, he hated killing things. Despite knowing that they would be remade later with better intentions. After regrouping and eventually convincing Hermes to join the Convocation, my job was complete for some time.

That is until the event we later would come to call “The Final Days”. When the Final Days commenced, heralding the end of my world, I joined with my fellow Convocation members to form a plan to halt the calamity that was threatening our very existence. To my understanding, our world was stagnating. The flow of Aether was stopping, though we could not tell why. That is when we came up with a plan, summon a primal god to undo the stagnation. This led to the creation of Zodiark. However, our problems had only just begun. My dear friend, Azem resigned upon hearing that to fix our problem, and save our world, we would have to sacrifice half of our population. This would include my dearest friend Hythlodeaus himself volunteering to become fuel for the Primal God that I had created, as he fully believed in my plan and ability to bring him back, along with the rest of our people.

Upon the creation of Zodiark, I had no idea that the deity had enthralled myself and others into becoming his devout followers, however he succeeded in stopping our calamity. Halting the final days and saving Etheirys. However, our savior had been summoned far too late. The The Final Days had taken their toll, and our world was not fit for life. So, myself and the other Convocation members (Those of us remaining of course, came to the plan of sacrificing the remaining half of our people to renew the world’s Aether.

Of course, this cost disturbed both Azem and Ventat, who already thought our cost was too high. They felt that our new world now belonged to the beings that were birthed into it after our sacrifice! They tried to persuade us to change course and let those that sacrificed themselves remain in the source, unable to return. After turning them down, they went to form an opposing group who felt similarly. My own friends turned against me!

They created their own primal named Hydaelyn in opposition to Zodiark. The resulting battle ended with Hydaelyn’s final attack shattering our reality into many shards. Fracturing the very beings that they had wanted to protect. Making mere shades of the new lives that once lived on Etheirys. However, thanks to a flaw in Hydaelyn’s attack, I survived intact along with my fellow Convocation members Elidibus and Lahabrea.

We vowed to remake our world and undo the terrible shattering that had torn us from everything we loved. We went on to become known as Ascians, beings that worked in the shadows of History. We pulled the strings, caused war and calamity across the shards, so that they would eventually succumb to a rejoining of our source. This would lead to a great calamity of course, killing thousands, but to us, the new beings that inhabited these worlds weren’t really people. So, it wasn’t really murder.

Yes we made our share of mistakes along the way. One of use messed up in the thirteenth shard, causing it to fall into darkness (Never send a rookie to do your job) and made it unsuitable to rejoin. For now at least. However, we have successfully rejoined seven of the thirteen shards. Also to my great dismay, it seems that my friend Azem was reborn across the shards. Becoming somewhat of a champion in each (Hydalyn’s doing I am sure). So I am now forced to deal with the shade of my friend time and time again. Ever battling me in an attempt to stop me.

At least I have Hythlodeaus. Well, a form of him. In my grief spamming thousands of years, I made a replica of our once proud city. Even down the very people I once knew and loved. Of course, I could never remake Azem. They were far too complex, always doing the right thing, and never thinking twice about it. This made them hard to read, and no matter how hard I tried, I could never remake the light that was their soul.
