All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places
Worn out faces.

I knew many people in this city. They busily went about their daily activities: going to work, picking up their children, buying clothes or food, visiting each other, and going home to eat, sleep, wake up, and commence their daily cycle one more day. I saw it in their faces that life had been wearing them down. Life had gotten so hectic for some that they floated through life in autopilot. Oh, they tried to hide their fatigue by energy drinks and the proverbial mask, but people like me could see right through it. I was always in tune to things like that. My brother, Riblayn, did not see what I could see. He told me I was being too sensitive; to get a backbone.

Sister Psychic, won't you tell me does it ever get better
Can you really see the future or just predict the weather
Are we in our finest hour or headed for disaster
Use your super powers and rescue me.

A sense of uneasiness was in the air. It was all so strange. The way citizens looked as you passed them on the sidewalk changed. They were no longer just worn and tired, they grew nervous. The media seemed to draw on the fears of the population. I, as well as my friends and many other people, turned to the New Age Movement and collected healing crystals in an effort to keep out this unknown negative energy that was threatening us. I surrounded my apartment with these crystals and used them often. So many more people thought the use of crystals was a ridiculous notion, my brother included. I thought if crystals were used more, then we could combat this threat before it gets too powerful. But it seemed once the wheels of fate were set in motion, there was no way to halt them in their progression to destruction.

Are the neighbors watching?
Who's watching?
Well, it's the mailman watching me,
and I don't feel safe anymore
Tell me who's watching
Oh, what a mess I wonder who's watching me now
(Who?) the IRS?

The world was getting steadily worse, and I was getting more nervous. Sometimes the crystals would not work when they used to work without fail. Trust had become a dead virtue. What was worse, the absence of trust made people do some insane things. I seem to remember the phrase 'It's a dog-eat-dog world' uttered daily by many people and the media. No longer did people greet others with a nod and a hello. No, it was now down to making no eye contact or cold quick glances. Some brave souls even scowled as they looked around. What had this world become? Throughout the day I would rub my worry stone in an effort to feel safe and forget about my worries. Just like the crystals, sometimes it would work and sometimes not. There was an uneasy feeling in the air like someone or something was watching us carefully as a scientist watches a mouse navigate a maze to find the cheese at the end. You now had to keep an eye on other people so they didn't try anything. I hated living like this. Would things ever go back to the way they were before all this? Even the government officials were catching the deadly disease of distrust and paranoia.

So this is the end of the story
Everything we had, everything we did
Is buried in dust
And this dust is all that's left of us.

It was so predictable, and yet almost everyone was blind--our enemy showed themselves to us. At first they tried to control us from the shadows, but some of us had sensed something was not right and we resisted. That is when they chose to control us by force. They came with tear gas and smoke bombs to scare us into submission. What happened was chaos; everyone ran in all directions. The people in the buildings ran out and joined the crowd. I had grabbed onto my brother and he grabbed onto me so we would not lose each other. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my worry stone with my free hand and rubbed it. I thought it would help somehow, but someone knocked into me and it fell out of my hand. That was when I felt panic swell up in me, also when things got a lot worse. Some of the buildings were collapsing. I assumed they were public buildings since the ominous 'they' tried to control us quietly. Someone fell against me, causing me to lose my balance and my grip on Riblayn and I fell under the weight of the body. I tried to get up as quickly as possible so I would not get trampled but I just ended up getting pushed around like a pinball in a pinball machine. The next thing I knew, a building fell on top of me. All I could do at that moment was pray that my brother would make it out of this alive. The last thing I saw was dust.

The shadows come to dance [my lord]
The shadows come to play.
