Meet Atari, a young little Eevee that hatched from his egg five seasons ago. He was a healthy Pokemon, bread from two of the strongest Eeveelutions that helped defeat the Elite Four. His trainer was Juju, a determined young man that had his eye set on being the worlds greatest Pokemon master, like all the others. He was getting older, at 22 years old he finally beat the young but ridiculously strong sixteen year old Champion.
Atari's mother was a level 80 Falreon. She was from Spain, and didnt talk much when she arrived in the new region. His father on the other hand was super rare, he was different from the other Umbreon. Instead of his rings glowing bright yellow, they were blue like the ring around the night moon. All other Pokemon and trainers greatly respected his father, and his mother found herself very lucky to be mated with such a marvelous Pokemon.
Juju had left His father, Centari, and his mother, Kyoko, in the daycare for a few nights before Atari was born. They had many other Eevees together, but for some reason Juju kept shipping them off in the GTS or releasing them into the wild. It didnt seem to mind Centari and Kyoko when their pups were being sent away. When Atari was born, his father told him that their trainer was trying to get Kyoko to give birth to another "shining" Pokemon like himself.
"What is a shining Pokemon, dad?" asked Atari as they ate fresh apples under a tree in front of the hotel they were staying in.
"Shiny is a rare birth defect that some trainers desire. A shining pokemon is a different color than the rest of its kind. I am shiny, that is why my rings are blue instead of yellow like the other Umbreon"
Atari had only seen pictures of other Umbreon, so seeing a "regular" one would probably be more surprising.
"So Juju keeps making you and mom have Eevees until he gets another shining Eevee? That sounds mean. That means I am not special because Im like all the others"
Centari brushed his nose against his sons cheek "You are special, because Juju wants to keep you anyway. He says you have a good nature and stats. He told the other trainers that you will be strong when you grow up. I also hadnt told you, but Kyoko is getting older and she said that she is done breeding. You are our last son. Juju will have to find another shining Eevee elsewhere"
Atari yipped with delight and finished his meal.
"Its almost noon, time for you to go to class with Delcatty Sensei" said Centari.
The young Eevee nodded and skipped away when he saw the nod of his trainers approval.
"Bye Atari, learn to fight well for your family!" said Juju.
"I will!" said Eevee, but he knew that his trainer only heard his words sound like "Eeee-veeee!"
When he got to the Pokeschool building, he scurried under the feet of other Pokemon and trainers until he got to the classroom for young, pre-evolved Pokemon. All the other trainers said goodbye to their Pokemon before leaving them alone. Their teacher was a sweet lady that Juju paid to help train his younger Pokemon. She was kind and always treated the them with care, and fed them snacks too.
"Hey, Atari" said Zapcheek, a Pichu in his class. He waved his bushy tail in a "hello" back.
"Atari!" said a voice as he turned around to see another Eevee that he didnt quite recognize until he caught their scent in his nose. It was Copy the Ditto. Copy was always tricking the other Pokemon, but they all found it amusing.
"Hey Copy, decided to be an Eevee today?" he said
"Yes!" Ditto said "Because of the topic we will be discussing today"
The other Pokemon got silent and listened to the teacher trainer. This teacher was special, but because she was not human at all! She was a rare kind of Pokemon that could speak to and understand both humans and Pokemon. It is said that only Legendary Pokemon can do this, but there have been some special common Pokemon that have been able to as well. Sensei was an older Delcatty and all the Pokemon loved her.
"Attention! Today we will take a break from Natures and EVs to learn about something special. Something that almost every Pokemon will go through in their life, and that is Evolution!"
Cheers and awes erupted from the classroom, and some newer and younger Pokemon looked confused. Sensei talked about how almost all Pokemon evolved. She mentioned some dont evolve at all, some like the Starters have three stages of evolution, some Evolve and have different forms depending on gender or items used on them, and some have choices into what they evolve into.
"Remember, little ones" she said at the end "All Pokemon should have the choice whether or not they want to evolve. It is true some trainers are tougher and encourage or even force their Pokemon to evolve, but I tell trainers that it is always up to the Pokemon whether they want to change. Evolving can be scary for some, because youre changing into someone different. Let me give you an example, Atari, come up here please!" she said with a smile on her face. Atari bounced up to the front of the class.
"This is an Eevee, and Eevee are very special because they can chose what they want to be when they evolve. Recently in Kalos, another form of Eevee evolution has been spotted. Look at the screen"
The hologram screen behind them showed pictures surrounding an eevee of all the different forms. He already spotted his mother and father, a Flareon and Umbreon, but he smiled with excitement as he saw all the other choices! A sparky Jolteon, a graceful Vaporeon, a flourishing Leafeon, a sharp cold Glaceon, a wise Espeon, and the last one made Atari's heart jump with joy.
"That one! I want to be that one!" he said jumping up and down. The elegant ribbons flowing in the wind, the cute pink! He wanted to be the new one!
Sensei laughed a bit and patted his head. A few of the older Pokemon looked at him oddly.
"Arent you a boy Eevee, though? and isn't your Trainer a boy too?" said a Charmander.
"Well, yea" mumbled Atari.
"Sylveon are supposed to be girls. Pink and bows are for girls. Thats why you see female Sylveon with girl trainers!"
"But...but...thats what I want to be" said Atari, drooping his long ears. Sensei hushed the rest of the students with a growl.
"Atari, you can be a Sylveon if you want. There are plenty of male Sylveon in the world"
"Yea, but theyre rare! Most male Sylveon are shining, like Azorous from the higher training class. He's a blue Sylveon so its kinda cute" said Zapcheek. The other Pokemon agreed.
"Yea Atari, why not be a handsome Vaporeon or something? Theyre still kinda frilly, but not THAT frilly!" said a Zigazoon from the back. The others started to agree and said "yea!".
"Right, Atari, you'd look so cute as an Umbreon too, like your dad!" said the Charmander. The class began discussing what other Eevee evolution Atari would look handsome or cute as, except for the one he wanted. The young Eevee felt a pain grow in his chest, and tears began to swell in his eyes.
"I ALREADY TOLD YOU I DON'T WANNA BE A STUPID UMBREON I WANNA BE A SYLVEON!" he howled loudly and began to cry heavy tears. Sensei tried to calm him down but he pushed her aside and used quick attack on the door, bursting it open and running as fast as he could out of the school. The young Eevee never felt this hurt in his life. When he got back to the hotel where his trainer was staying, he curled up in a ball underneath the nearby tree and continued sobbing. He stayed there for a good hour until he heard Juju's voice.
"Atari, what are you doing, what is wrong?" he said. Atari tried to explain to his trainer why he was upset, but all his trainer could understand was "Eee-Eee-VeeEe-EEvee-a-Eeeee-eevv" mixed with sobbing and tears. Juju held him close to his chest. This was the first time he had ever been so close to his trianer.
They arrived at the Pokeschool to see that class was already dismissed, and the rest of the trainers were either going home or having practice battles in the courtyard. Delcatty Sensei was in the front of the building with another Eevee, Atari recognized it as Copy right away. He jumped down from his trainers arms and nudged noses with his Ditto friend.
"I was worried about you!" said Copy. Atari was grateful he had such a caring friend, he realized that Copy was the only one who kept quiet during the whole ordeal. Juju got on one knee in front of the Pokemon teacher.
"What happened with Atari today, Delcatty Sensei?"
Delcatty told him what happened as the Eevee watched. Atari was choked up, afraid of what his trainer would say.
"Oh...that's too bad" he said "Atari and Eevee, please leave us to talk in private" he said to the Pokemon. They backed away slowly to behind the building where they peered behind the wall to listen.
"Juju, it is important to allow the Pokemon to chose whether or not they want to evolve for you. Pokemon are your friends, not made as weapons for battling. The more trainers think like that the more members of Rocket Gang we will have"
"I know, Sensei. I just didnt think that Atari would mind. I mean, I was going to let him choose but...I was hoping maybe a Vaporeon or a Jolteon. Not many Sylveon are around, but...it is true that only female trainers have them. Hell, even my girlfriend has one. Female Eevee are more hard to come by, but almost every one I see is being changed into a Sylveon. Id just feel really weird walking around as a tough guy with a Sylveon"
Atari felt anger rage through him as teas filled his eyes again. Copy put their tail around him in comfort.
"Juju" said Delcatty Sensei with a tilted head. "I dont think you understand. Pokemon are also not a fashion statement. What Pokemon you train does not determine how masculine or feminine you are, and their appearance doesn't reflect how tough or weak you are. Atari is his own person and has his own body. If he wanted to stay a weak Eevee forever, are you telling me you wouldn't be okay with that?"
Juju scratched his head "Well...I never thought of that. Evolving is natural, why wouldnt he want to?"
"Not all of us have to follow exactly what is "natural"" said Delcatty. "Look at me, do you think a common Pokemon and a human having intelligent conversation is natural? My whole life was a confusing mess, because I didnt fit in with Pokemon or humans. I always felt like a mix of both. I love being a Pokemon, but I love interacting with the human world, learning, and speaking to your kind too. So why cant Atari do something that is a little out of the norm? So what if he wants to have bows and be pink"
Delcatty Sensei put her paw on Juju's hand "Sylveon and fairy Pokemon aren't here as a feminine statement for female trainers. Sylveon can only evolve with love, not just friendship, but love. If you allow Atari to be what he wants, he will love you probably more than any of your other Pokemon and stick by you forever!"
Juju was silent for a while. Atari thought he was going to reject Sensei's words. He then got on both knees and held Delcatty's paw in his hand. "Youre absolutely right, Sensei. I wasnt thinking because I dont know what its like to be a Pokemon. Im so glad I was able to see how they feel by being able to talk to you. I will let Atari evolve as soon as possible if that is what he wants"
The Delcatty purred and nodded "Come back any time to speak with me, my doors are open. Oh, one more thing. Wait here" she said and padded back inside. Juju was still sitting in the dirt as Atari bounded up to him with great speed and jumped in his arms, licking his face with joy. Juju laughed and hugged him.{br]"Hey now, stop licking me so much or you'll turn into a Gastly!" he said. Copy jumped on his lap too, and received ear scratches as well until their trainer came a few minutes later to pick them up.
"Oh hey, Juju. Sorry Im late, thanks for looking after Copy!"
"No problem" he said "Those two really get a long"
"They sure do! Hey, I always wanted an Eevee myself" she said, tossing her hair and looking down shyly. "Maybe we can put Atari and Copy in the Daycare sometime in hopes of me getting one?" she said with a wink.
"WHAT?!" exclaimed Atari and Copy at the same time as they exchanged awkward glances. Juju and Copy's trainer laughed. "I think maybe theyre too young right now, maybe when Atari is more comfortable" he said.
"No problem! Copy, Transform into Dragonite please!" she said, and in a flash Copy became five times their size as their trainer mounted the Dragonite."See you later!" she said, and as Copy looked down at Atari to wave, he noticed the Ditto was blushing.Copy spread their wings and flew off with the trainer towards the edge of town.
A few minutes later Delcatty came back with a shell and a Heart Scale in her mouth and put them in Juju's hand."Give the scale to the man on the beach and he will teach Atari the fairy move Charm, and put shell bell around your Eevee's neck to increase friendliness. It may help him evolve faster"
"Thank you so much Sensei" said Juju and waved good bye, Atari shouted his goodbyes as well. He was the happiest Eevee in the world.
Juju and his Eevee went to the shore and gave the man his Heart Scale. Atari forgot the move Tail Whip and learned Charm. He danced around the beach and tested his new move on a wild Krabby, and finished off the battle with Quick Attack and Tackle."That was fun!" said Eevee as he jumped up into Juju's arms and nuzzled his ear. "Im so glad youre happy, Atari. Im really glad I didnt give you away" he said and held the Eevee in his hands in front of his face. Centari and Kyoko were out of their Pokeballs, sitting on the beach with heir tails intertwined and heads together. "I want to say sorry to all three of you" he said, glancing over at his parents. "I got a foreign mate for you because I wanted you two to make another shiny. I wasnt happy with just one shiny, I wanted 9 of them so I could have all the eeveelutions be shiny just to show them off to other trainers and gym leaders. I wasnt thinking about your feelings and how sad you must have been that I just gave your pups away because they werent good enough" a small tear fell down Juju's left cheek as he looked at Atari "And Im sorry I didnt ask you what you wanted to be, and judged you by what society thought you should be. Pokemon are my friends, not my pets that I can do whatever I want with. I love all of you" he said. Atari wiped away his trainer's tear."Its okay, we forgive you" said Centari "Ummbri-umbreon" is what Juju heard, but its like he almost knew what it meant. Kyoko yipped in agreement."I love you too!" said Atari. "EEvee-eee!"At that moment, while the sun was setting, a bight light erupted out of Atari's fur. Juju dropped him out of shock and stepped back, looking in awe as his Pokemon shone like an exploding star. The light got bigger and bigger until it was as big as the other two Pokemon. When Atari stopped shining, the light faded to reveal a beautiful pink Sylveon. He waved the long ribbons from the bow on his ear and neck and jumped up and down."Wow! Look at me!" screeched Atari "Look at me! Im a beautiful Sylveon!" "Sylvee-sylvee-ooon, Sylveeeon!""Im so proud of you son!" said Centari as his parents nudged his fur with their noses, and he wrapped the fleshy ribbons around them with affection. The trainer got on his knees with arms spread out."You look great, Atari!" he said as the Sylveon jumped in his arms, twirling his new ribbons around his arms and back. Juju got out his Pokedex and pointed it at his new Pokemon. The robotic Pokedex voice spoke as it scanned."Sylveon, the Intertwining Pokémon and an evolved form of Eevee. Sylveon affectionately wraps its ribbon-like feelers around its trainer's arms as they walk together""That sounds so cool!" he exclaimed. Now he got a new Pokemon for his Dex as well! At that moment he heard a female voice call his name. It was his girlfriend, Amira, on her bike with a Yamask floating beside her."Hey, is that your Sylveon? Where did you find her?""Hey Amira, actually this is Atari. He's the new Eevee I told you about"Juju told her about his day, and what went on with Atari in the Pokemon classroom and what Delcatty Sensei said to him."Oh thats so sad!" she said petting Atari and letting him wrap his ribbons around her arm "And how mean of the other trainers and Pokemon. They obviously know NOTHING about Pokemon biology! MOST Sylveons are actually Biologically male. Its only a 20 percent chance that a Eevee will be born a female, unlike humans where its 50/50. Yes its true that its usually a girl trainer with them, but who cares? I can tell Atari loves you very much" she said and kissed Juju on the cheek "and so do I. You care very much for your Pokemon. Thats a trait every girl likes!" Juju blushed. "The Delcatty taught me a lot today, and Im glad she did. Lets go get something to eat" he said as they headed towards the town with Atari in the middle, one ribbon around Amira's and and one around his Trainers.
