Torti is how they described her. A tortoiseshell. Her name was Shelby and she was an orphan. She was brought to the local animal shelter for needing too much attention. She was only 8 months old, she just wanted to play.

So Shelby was put into a large room filled with cages. She was caged for her first few weeks before she was allowed to walk around on the floor with a select few other cats. The freedom was nice, so much room to run around, and lots of other cats to keep her company. Yet things just weren't right. Something was missing from her life. There had to be something... more.

Months went by and people came and went. Other cats got adopted. Other cats arrived and left, yet still she remained. People didn't want her. She couldn't help that she was a little cranky, she couldn't help that she didn't like being held. People just didn't understand her.

One day the shelter got a new staff member, there was nothing really different from her and the others. She was there to do the same thing as everyone else. She cleaned cages and helped animals get adopted. When animals got sick she would help with the medications. Shelby hated the medications, they tasted nasty.

Things continued on as normal, months passed. But one day that new staff member came into the room crying. She headed right for Shelby and buried her face in Shelby's soft fur. As she cried she stroked Shelby's torti fur. She spoke softly, she had just lost her cat, he had passed away. Shelby did something out of character, she let the girl pet her and cry on her. She wasn't one for cuddles, but she somehow knew that the girl needed it.

Days later a foster home was available for Shelby. She had been at the shelter for over a year. The shelter payed to have her spayed and found a nice home for her to recover in. She was gone all of two weeks before being brought back. The foster family left without a goodbye.

The staff member was there when she returned and was excited to see her. Shelby didn't know why. She brought people to see her, she was let out of her kennel and they petted her before leaving. Humans could be so confusing.

A week to the day the same staff member with the help of another staff girl came to Shelby. They sealed her into the small side room with them and a carrier. Shelby didn't like carriers. She was not going to make this easy. They'd never catch her! Or so she thought. With the use of heavily padded gloves they managed to wrangle her into the kennel. Shelby did her best to thwart them, she kicked, scratched, screamed, jumped, clawed, and climbed the walls, but they were persistent.

Shelby didn't want to be in the kennel. Where would they take her? She cried pathetically as they loaded the kennel into a car. To her surprise the staff member climbed in beside her. She spoke in soft calming words as Shelby continued to cry. They weren't in the vehicle long, but Shelby was glad when it stopped. Her carrier was lifted out of the car by the girl, who carried Shelby into a strange house. A few minutes later the kennel door was opened. FREEDOM! Shelby dashed out of the kennel and stopped. It smelled different in this place. Kind of like the girl, but there were a lot more smells. Shelby began to explore the house. She found her food bowl and her litter box as well as a bunch of her favorite toys. Maybe she'd like it here?

1 year later.

Things could be worse... much worse. The staff member became her new owner, Charity is her name. But she had a whole family now, the brother, the parents, and the grandparents. There were also the two dogs, but they fought like, well... cats and dogs. Shelby was happy in her new home. She would sleep in bed with the parents every night, she was glad that meant she didn't need to be alone. She spent most of her days in the downstairs apartment with the grandparents. She liked Grampy the best. Her food bowl was full and her litter box clean. She had more toys than she could count. She liked the staff member, Charity, she brought her to her new home. Her home is the best!
