13 August. — The night sky sure was beautiful tonight. While stargazing this evening, I was reading a very interesting book about why even though cooler seasons are best for stargazing, the cooler months are also generally cloudier than the warmer months. Apparently, most days in the upcoming winter season are commonly overcast due in part to the tilt of the earth, and a thin, warm layer of air encompassing the cooler air nearer the surface of the planet. This thin, warm layer of air is what usually prevents any newer, warm air from rising into the atmosphere from the surface, thus preventing the formation of the fluffy clouds, called cumulus clouds, that let in more sunshine that we commonly see in the summer. The thinner, more spread out stratus clouds prevalent in the winter frequently form in the lower atmosphere instead. This is also why clouds appear to be higher in the sky in the warmer seasons than in the cooler seasons!

19 August. —Another clear night – perfect for stargazing. Autumn is getting closer, and I couldn't be more ready for the beautiful fall foliage. It's my favorite season of all, closely followed by spring. Summer is my least favorite season due to the excessively hot and humid days and the shorter nights. Since I tend to stay up into the late hours of the night, I think that I was probably a nocturnal animal in my last life. Something about the night sky just seems comforting to me. It probably has something to do with the hustle and bustle of diurnal creatures dying down and the silence that follows. Quiet, clear nights are so peaceful.

23 August. — Today was so hot and humid. It was dreadful. I didn't want to let a hoof outside, but plants aren't going to water themselves. While I was tending the garden and watching the clouds lull by in the sky, I brainstormed ideas on how I could set up an effective sprinkler system. I'm not very construction-inclined, so I think I'll have to commission someone to help me out.

25 August. — It rained today. While drinking hot chocolate and listening to the pitter-patter of the rain, I read a book about humidity. I commonly heard that warm air holds moisture better than cool air, but that is technically incorrect. There is a misconception that air holds water – but it doesn't! Instead of air retaining water, the higher temperature of the warmer months allows for a higher partial pressure of gaseous, or vaporized water, as opposed to liquid water. It boils down to the pressure equilibrium between the gas and liquid forms of water. Semantics really, but interesting nonetheless! I'm ready for these humid months to be over – I can't wait for the dry winter season with its tranquil, longer nights.
