I don't want to eat the chicken.

I can hear the turning of the crank and the creaking of the rusty pulley as the dead bird is lowered over the tank where I lurk.

I will not give into temptation. I am stronger than my instincts. I will...

...launch! Snap!

Why is self-control so blasted difficult?

Delighted screams and laughter arise from the humans in the stands as they blind me with their flashing lights. I'm glad to sink beneath the water as I devour my slimy prize. Raw chicken is the taste of shame.

"Ladies and gentleman! The great Behemoth!"

Why do humans come up with such stupid names? My real name is Quisp and it is a beautiful name, given to me by my mother.

Most people think the crocodile is a thoughtless eating machine like our distant cousin, the shark. This is not true. We study the patterns of the stars to know when it is time to cross the river, to seek a mate, or to surrender our hides to the bottom feeders. My clan was formed on the seventeenth month after the dawning of time which is why every female begins the names of her babies with the letter "Q".

The gate at the bottom of the tank opens, allowing me to escape from one prison into another. The Pit is spacious enough to hold four of us. Romino and Roldast are brothers who can never agree on anything. Queleena is the only female in our group. We all took a dart to the neck when she laid eggs a few days after her arrival. She spends the daylight hours digging through the sand and fake grass, trying to relocate her lost treasures.

There is no peace from human noise except in the night hours, when the cold breeze makes our blood sluggish. Children press their noses to the safety glass well over our heads, sneering and making faces. It is delightful to open my jaws and send them running away with screams of terror.

I know there is no escaping this captive's life, but humans cannot get inside my dreams.

When I close my eyes, the rain begins to fall. It washes away the plastic palm trees and hot dog carts, erasing all signs of the human world as it gently carries me a thousand miles over glorious water, to the banks of my native home. A beauty the humans called Big Bertha waits for me there. Her real name is Qiyana and she is the most beautiful creature to ever flash her scales.

I always wake before we have the chance to swim for deeper water.

Today it is the clicker that pulls me from my dreams. I know the series of sounds that summons me to the water, where another fowl meal awaits.
