Regulus Arcturus Black
’Summer of 79 - 18 y/o

“You’re sure you can do this?†The boy asked as he raised an eyebrow at his family’s house elf. “Positive†he croaked back as he looked at the locket his master held. “And you swear to do what I say? No matter what?†“Anything, sir†Kreacher said as he quickly bowed and took the locket as Regulus motioned it toward him. Putting his hand around his master’s arm, Kreacher snapped his fingers and in an instant they were gone.
Apparating into a small, damp cave overlooking the ocean, Regulus had to shout to be heard over the roar of the waves. “How do we get in?†he asked as he walked around, trying to find an entrance to another area. He knew Voldemort wouldn't have hidden it in such an easily accessible area. Kreacher moved to what seemed like just another part of the wall and nodded towards it. "One must give... Blood to enter" He told Regulus, remembering how Voldemort had used him to test the security of his horcrux's protection.
He pulled up his left sleeve and scowled when he saw the dark mark he had received years ago. He dragged his wand along it as he muttered “Diffindoâ€, causing a trickle of bright red blood to flow from the cut. Not a moment after he smeared it on the wall, the rocks rearranged themselves and an entrance was formed.
The majority of the cave consisted of a large body of water with a small island in the middle, dimly lit by a small glow of light overhead. "This way," Kreacher instructed, his voice echoing. He motioned toward a small boat chained at the very corner of the lake, barely visible at first glance. “Don’t touch the water,†the elf warned as they made their way towards the boat. Regulus made careful to not do so, and chose not to ask him why; he hoped he would not have to find out.
Once they arrived to the island, the only thing on it was a small stone basin filled with an emerald potion. As Regulus approached it, he saw the locket Kreacher had told him about glimmering at the bottom. “You said one of us has to… Drink it?†He asked with a grimace on his face. “Yes, yes, all of it.†Kreacher replied with a cringe, as images of what had happened the night before flashed in his head.
“Well,†Regulus said as he started to scoop the liquid up, “Cheers.†Within a second of it touching his lips, he braced against the basin to prevent falling. “Ah, bloody hell!†He moaned as the potion began to affect him. After a second agonizing drink, he collapsed to the floor. “Master Regulus,†Kreacher croaked as he leaned over his convulsing body.
Facing the fact that he had to make him finish it, he walked to the basin and removed a bit of the liquid. “Make it stop! Please!†Regulus groaned, as Kreacher brought the cup up to his mouth telling him to drink it, reminding him why they were there.
Once all the potion was drank, a good portion of it being forced, there was only one more thing to do. As Kreacher made his way to the empty basin to place the fake locket in it, Regulus’ silent plea for water went unheard. The inevitable thirst from the potion had finally set in.
Before Kreacher could stop him, he moved towards the lake and placed his hand in it. The silence and stillness of the cave was cut off by the sudden movement of thousands of corpses as they awoke beneath the water’s surface.
Kreacher turned just in time to see the inferi descend upon Regulus, who frantically pulled out his wand to defend himself. “Stupify! Petrificus totalus! Kreacher, go! Take it! De-destroy it!†Regulus’ words were choked with panic as the inferi began to pull him towards the lake. “Avada Ke-kedavra! You promised! You pr-promised you would do what I say! Go! Now!â€
As the elf watched Regulus struggle within the arms of the inferi, he realized this was the end and that he had no other choice but to leave the cave. Seconds before disaperating, Kreacher looked him in the eyes and muttered the words “Forgive me.â€
Kreacher’s voice was the last thing Regulus heard before being pulled into the murky water of the lake.
All that was left to show for his actions was a locket that held a letter, signed with the initials “R.A.B.â€
