She made two short stitches crosswise, the needle biting through her thin lips like cotton. She needed the silence to fill her, to replace the emptiness between her ribs that threatened to tear through and leave its vacuum behind. Darkness resided already behind the places where her eyes had been. The girl had fulfilled half of her promise; all that was left was to free herself from the burden of sound that threatened to well up in her throat. She pulled the thread tight and let the needle dangle from the corner of her mouth; as after all she could no longer bite off the loose end. If she had enough breath then perhaps she would have sighed slightly with contentment and weariness. She knew that it was not enough merely to be struck dumb, even if by her own hand; she must empty herself of the remnants of her soul and replace it with silence and darkness. Only in absence is there purity; only in loneliness and pain is there freedom. She slipped into the void, slowly, slowly.
