Surabhi (Sanskrit): lovely; fragrant

"Mother Earth tickled her soul and whispered breezy blessings through her whiskers. The feeling of dirt and grass beneath Surabhi's petite paws as she stalked through wind blown grasses below and foliage above was exhilarating. With each step, the earth pulsed, the wind sang... then she heard them. She halted, afraid that even a half-hearted breath would scare them away. Feathers almost inaudibly brushed as the air passed through the tiny wings of the forest spirits. Padding silently, she followed them as they gathered to one ancient gray oak, taking care to stay far enough away to remain undetectable. They were skittish beings, forest spirits, yet simple creatures of pure life and energy, signifying the health of a forest. Surabhi noted how the spirits flitted so bird-like from branch to branch of the ancient tree, seemingly comforted by its swaying boughs. Likewise, the tree seemed to welcome them, embracing each with a warmth and tenderness in his twigs as a father would his children. She longed to do the same, but knew her presence may not be welcomed. After years of silent watching, Surabhi had deduced that the old gray oak did actually protect and care for the rest of the woodland. His roots spread far and wide, connecting and communicating to all of the other plant life in his realm. As the oldest tree in the wood, all other foliage must have come originally from his single soul. There was something beautiful in the thought that one acorn eventually created a network of green life. Suddenly, Surabhi's ears perked: leaves rustled and snapped with the distinct sound of metal splintering through saplings. Someone was coming, cutting through the woodland. She felt the earth tingle under her paws, a direct message from the ancient oak, and the spirits in his branches seemed to understand. Like a mist, they scattered silently. Surabhi turned to face this new threat, bristling at the apparent malicious intent of the new visitor. Though the spirits and the tree may never know she existed, Surabhi loved them so dearly that she would protect them with her life."
