"Father, where do the Sun and the Moon come from?"

"If you promise to go to sleep after, child, I will tell you their story."

"I promise."

"Then be still and listen well."

When the World was new and the Gods were young, Mankind came into being from stardust fallen to the earth. Because all Gods needed homage, three Gods decided to compete with one another to see whose creation can gather the most tribute from Man.

The Fabled Hart, Warden of the Forest, created horses, for Man to ride into war. The tribe gifted with the steeds won many battles over nearby tribes, and spread the glory that is their patron God. The Hart gained many new followers and was pleased with their tributes of seeds and grains.

The Ancestral Whale, Guardian of the Ocean, created tsunamis to demonstrate Her powers to Man. The waves destroyed many coastal dwellings. Out of fear, the people sacrificed livestocks on the shores to calm the water. The Whale was satisfied.

The Lored Serpent, Sentinel of the Sky, observed Man for a long time from his seat in the heavens before he decided on his creation. He saw the folks toiling hard to carry water from the rivers to irrigate their sickly crops. The Serpent created rain. The falling drops watered the crops, and also filled their barrels and buckets for drinking and washing. The people greeted the rain joyously. With every drop that fell, they gave their most sincere thanks to the Sky God.

(Art by Trishadoll)

Long after the tribe with the Hart's horses returned from war, and the Whale's tsunamis were appeased, the rain fell year after year. The tribes forgot about the Hart's gift, and the Whale's terrible waves, but they still ate of the crops grown from the Serpent's rain. And so the Lored Serpent won this competition of the Gods.

The Hart and the Whale were angry at their loss, for they believed the Serpent's creation to be unworthy of the victory. What were droplets of water to the complexity of blood coursing through a stallion's veins, or to the scale of a tsunami? The two Gods banded together to have their revenge on the Serpent. While the Whale trapped the Serpent with a web woven of water, the Hart stole one of the Serpent's eye and threw it up into th heavens.

The stolen eye became the Moon, and darted away with a gifted life of its own. The Lored Serpent, with his one good eye, desperately chased after it.

Even with his injury and lost eye, the Serpent still watched the nascent Mankind he has come to love. He saw that the rainfall was not enough and Man's crops still grew sickly. He made one more creation: channeling his power into his one remaining eye, he made it into the Sun. His eye shone with warmth and light, nourishing the crops on earth. The crops grew tall and strong, and Man finally starved no longer.

To this day, the Serpent still has not caught up to his lost eye, the Moon. And so the Moon and the Sun circles one another in an endless chase in the heavens above the earth. But the earth is in darkness no more, for both of the Lored Serpent's eyes take turns watching over us all, and there is light forevermore.
