Baby is my own dog, a beloved chihuahua/jack russell terrier mix. She turned 10 in 2017, and I still feel like I only just brought her home. An 8 week old puppy that could sit in the palm of my hand, or curl up in the nape of my neck when I'm laying down. She still does that, but it makes breathing a little difficult.
Baby does not fetch. Many have tried to make her care about the stick or the ball, and she will give you a look that says 'It's your stick. YOU go get it.' She will, however, tug-of-war the heck out of anything that you have the other end of, if you'll let her. She has a surprising amount of strength for a 14lb dog! Her favourite is her snake rope-toy, which never fails to make me smile as she brings it over to me with that look of 'Mum, mum can we play, pls?'
Baby loves people. Not babies, because they have very few manners, but anyone that will give her a gentle pat or a tickle under the chin. She is not fussy about whose lap she sits on. She will share the love, and take every bit of attention she can get. I have yet to meet somebody who doesn't love my dog. She has converted many a cat person, pulled on the heartstrings of the indifferent, calmed the ever-so-slightly fearful.
Baby has had a few scrapes in her life. When she was 7, her knee came out of place and she had to have a big awesome surgery which resulted in a metal plate in her leg. My little bionic dog. Other fun medical history includes: the time she ate a pound of chocolate and I had to make her throw up; the time she ran into a glass door and chipped her tooth and the time she ate a bee and her entire face swelled up.
Baby has been by my side for most of her life. She's started to slow down a bit now. Sleeping most of the day, running a little bit less, clinging to my side for the warmth I give. I hope this is just her golden years, and they last a long, long time. I can't imagine what I'll ever do without her.
An update: Baby lived a few more years - until she was 14 (and a half!). She died in my arms, as loved as could be. I still don't know what to do without her.
