The fishermen sat glumly in the corner of the large stone hall, poking at their gruel while the storm outside raged. The villagers on the other side of the hall occasionally cast disgusted looks in their direction while they muttered among themselves.

Seething at the cold treatment they were receiving from the villagers, one of the younger men suddenly stood up and threw his bowl on the floor.

"This isn't fair, you can't treat us like this!", he shouted.

Silence fell over the villagers as everyone stopped to look at him.

"You're right, this isn't fair", said one of the elderly villagers in a shaky voice. "Why are we being punished for what you did?"

"We didn't do anything!", he snarled as one of the other men from his group jumped up to try and pull him away from the argument.

"It isn't worth it", he muttered, "we just need to..."

"We told you that you couldn't fish in these waters! But you didn't listen to us, just for a bit of profit", sneered one of the sun toughened villagers.

"Now the ocean guardian is angry!", whimpered one of the children.

"It's not real!!", screamed the young man. The days hiding in the deep cave had frayed his nerves and he lunged at the child in his rage. Some of the other men managed to grab a hold of him, pulling him back while the villagers reflexively jumped in front of the child.

"Leave us", came a calmer voice from the back of the villagers, "Stay in your rooms until the storm passes. We'll bring you food, but as soon as it is safe to do so, you need to leave this village. Hopefully the guardian will let you do so peacefully".

The one who seemed to be the leader of the fishermen nodded silently and began to herd the others towards the storage area that had served as their rooms.

A few days later the storm finally broke to reveal a gorgeous sunrise filtering through the mist. The fishermen paid little attention as they loaded their ship to return to the city with nothing to show for their long trip.

As he steered the ship, one of the men looked out at the deep blue ocean. He could see massive shoals of fish clamoring to eat the seaweed and other things that had been brought up by the storm. Silvers, blues, greens, and every other color glittered off their scales as they leaped...but there was something else. Something large and dark seemed to cut its way through the gleaming shoals, like a giant snake. It must just be a large clump of seaweed, being pulled by the currents, he thought. If it were a snake, the fish would be afraid. Unless...but it can't be. It's not real.
