The lights.

The lights always drew her gaze, making her tremble in excitement as she climbed through the leaves, the night air against her fur chilling her. The humans were many things - loud, obnoxious, destroyers, murderers - yet they also made a few wonderful things as well. Her mother would have a fit if she knew she was this close to the village, but she couldn't stay away, not when they were calling her with their beauty.

The lights glistened and gleamed, seemingly dancing upon the roof tops and fences. They flickered and flashed, some simpler colors, others amazing bright flashes that reminded her of a rainbow. Her little paws kept tight hold of the limb as she ventured closer to the village, tail swaying lightly behind her. Oh, she wanted these lights in her forest, wanted to hang them around her nest and sleep with their soothing glow around her.

She had learned before that these little lights only lived in the village. If she tried to steal them away, they would lose their light and go cold. Even the ones in fragile, floating nests perished when she tried to take them with her, tearing in the branches. Grief had struck her when she had realized that the lights only danced in the village, though she had decided she would not let them elude her.

The trees were growing sparse now as she ventured ever closer to the forbidden area. Many terrible tales had been told to her as a cub, stories of all sorts of animals disappearing when they neared the village, never to be heard from again. That scared her of course, but she was smart and fast - she would be in and out. Though venturing this close... No. She had to be brave, to see the lights up close, to feel their glow against her fur. Soon she ran out of trees, not even the tallest bamboo branch able to help her and the little panda found herself in a dilemma. There were the dens of the humans, tall, large, and with smooth rocks on their tops.

A whine left her as she fidgeted on the branch, looking at the dark rock, not sure if it was safe. Though a few more lights began to dance, greeting the night with their happy flashes and she carefully hopped down.

The landing was rougher than she had imagined and the rock was hard to grip! She slid down the roof, squeaking in panic until she managed to cling and dig her claws into the odd material. It was cold and difficult to move along, though she soon found a way to do so (very carefully of course). Her paws carried her almost noiselessly across the dens of the humans, her round ears twitching this way and that as she listened for danger. She could hear the humans, hear them talking and laughing, though most were inside their dens. She slowed and laid down on her belly as she came to a light, smiling, reaching out with her paw - it was warm. So beautiful and green, like a leaf of bamboo. It glowed like the moon and stars, casting a soft light on her features and paw, making her chirr happily.

Oh, why could she not take these beautiful little lights with her? It saddened her that they were so close and yet so far out of her reach. She could only admire them among the human territory for a short while. She let herself venture to other den tops, curiously exploring the sights and smells, finding lights of all colors - even one as red as her own fur! She giggled softly as she brushed her paw over the glow before she frowned and sighed.

She needed to head home. It would be light soon and then the humans would be very active. She had been lucky so far not running into any, but she might not be so lucky once the sun awakens. Looking at the lights as she made her way back towards the tree line was her comfort as she scurried along the cold rock topped dens. There was a few moments of fear as she couldn't find the limb she had ventured into the village from, though she found another one that was more suitable, climbing up and across it to the sturdy base of the tree. Quietly, her gaze went back to the town one more time, watching the gleam of the lights in the dawn of the day.

Yes, while humans could do horrible, unspeakable things...but she did like their happy little lights.
