Embalming technique to clear the body of livor mortis:
1. Ensure that the head and shoulders are elevated to help blood drain from the upper tissues.
2. If the discoloration does not clear, this may indicate that a blockage is present (most often coagulum) in the right atrium of the heart or possibly in the right internal jugular vein. In this situation, the carotid artery should be used for injection and the internal jugular for drainage.
3. In situations where the body has not been dead for an extended period of time, a preinjection or mild arterial solution may be used to help clear the blood discolorations.
4. Begin with continuous drainage until the livor has cleared from the body then use intermittent or alternate drainage techniques.
5. Manual massage and mechanical raising and flexing of a body limbs cam assist with the flow of the injection solution into a discolored body region as well as the blood drainage.
6. Always pay special attention to the nailbeds when dealing with rigor- clearing of them indicates distribution of the fluid. This is especially important when embalming those with darker skin because the "death pallor" is not always evident.
7. The trunk and buttocks where livor is not cleared should be treated hypodermically to ensure best preservation, whereas in the head or limbs, arteries should be raised and sectional embalming must be performed.
🫀
Conditions exhibiting intense livor mortis include: carbon monoxide, drowning, hanging, and extended refrigeration
