The inky calmness of the ocean's surface reflected back the fading stars in the sky and the first fiery streaks of sun as dawn fell. No breeze stirred the water. No creature broke the stillness. It was the calm of infinity.
Until the thrum of a fishing boat's engine shattered the calm.
The skipper was young but not stupid. A third-generation fisherman from a family of ocean-loving old salts, this was his first solo voyage. The one where he would prove his worth to the industry.
Or literally die trying.
His nemesis?
Nameless. No two survivors can quite agree on their appearance, either.
Some claim they are dark mermaids with tortured souls. Others rank them as relations to the equally mysterious kraken. All fishermen can agree these creatures hate man. They loathe his noise and his interference with the natural food sources within their territory.
The borders of that territory are not well defined but the area where they lurk is roughly known. Unfortunately, the natural coral in those dangerous waters are a lure for the biggest and most delectable fish. Why settle for a mug of cheap grog when some careless demigod at the next table has neglected his mug of nectar? It's the usual tale of human greed leading to a greatly reduced lifespan for the fool who shelters that greed in his heart.
This bold boy has already lost three uncles to that siren named Greed. His father warned him to be satisfied with his lot. His mother cried and begged. He had the soul of an old adventurer, though. The sort rarely bred in the modern world.
The creatures had begun to stir at the first gentle ripples. They were worked into a frenzy by the time the boat had crossed that invisible line they instinctively knew from birth.
They were fearless, but not foolish. Their first line of defense was to simply frustrate their enemy.
Streaking through the water like lightning, they disrupted every school of fish for miles, driving them far from the offending boat, into the heart of the forbidden waters. The fisherman came up with discarded junk and the occasional skeletal fragment of a shark or whale. He was wasting his fuel and earning only the future ridicule of fellows who stuck to more sensible fishing zones.
His reputation and his very livelihood depended on this trip. After two days of disappointment, he pressed on.
The creatures hissed and snarled in their native tongue. It was rare for their tactics to fail. It had been years since a human failed to heed their warning.
The sea monster - the largest and oldest of them - stretched her fins and tail in a luxurious figure eight when they called on her services. She had disabled great men of war and even dragged a submarine down to the depths, an amusing bath toy...until it had imploded unexpectedly. This little boat could be overturned with the flick of a fingertip.
The glitter of a golden bauble halted her midstride.
The boy was well educated in the local legends. The creatures below were fierce and impossibly wild...but they did have a weakness. They were hopelessly distracted by oh-so-shiny trinkets that could hold a glitter even in the deepest depths. Some of the jewelry tossed by the boy was real, some costume jewels he'd painted with waterproof paint.
The offending boat was forgotten as the creatures fought tooth and claw over the pretty bits.
The boy cast his nets with precision. He had bought maybe two hours of peace. With the best bait on the market and a winch that could haul a blue whale, he'd have to hope it would be enough.
The creatures would not stay distracted forever.
His haul proved impressive - easily enough tonnage to keep his family fed and the lights on for another year.
He turned the boat toward home and gunned his engine, making for more friendly waters as if all the devils of hell were on his trail.
He wasn't far from the truth.
The first bump on the starboard side was almost playful. The second had the boat rising partway out of the water. In desperation, he flung the last of the jewelry he'd held back in a wide arc.
The third hit almost sent him flying into their waiting jaws. He clung to the mast and muttered a seafarer's prayer under his breath.
A welcome sight. The striped lighthouse where none of the creatures had ever been spotted. He sank to the deck with a cry of relief.
They floated in a line right at the border, glaring at the hateful rumbling thing until the last ripples had stilled. Hissing in unison, they turned and made their way back to the heart of their territory to await the next victim fool enough to dare the wrath of the ocean's oldest predators.
