In Japanese folklore, it was feared that when a person died tragically, their soul would become a vengeful spirit (commonly referred to as Onryō), causing disasters, pestilence, and haunting. People worshipped the Onryō as a Goryō (御霊, honorable spirit) and tried to avert disaster by appeasing his anger. The Japanese word "御霊" is often read as "Mitama" ("Goryō" is also the correct reading), which is a term of respectful invocation of ancestral spirits.
