Born from Mutation

{Story by Corgi-osis | Edited and Proofread by Sven}

"Subject 3578183,” you said softly to yourself, glancing at each clipboard attached to each cage.

Fearful eyes often looked back, as if some unspoken horror would snatch them away. The only sounds around you were the worried whimpers, the sound of your shoes upon the floor, and the buzzing of the light fixtures above. This job wasn't so bad, at least so far, but you hadn't been the one fetching the pets. You were been told all were willing subjects, who signed up to be tested on. But looking into the eyes of every cage suggested otherwise.

Finally, you arrived at cage number 56782. It appeared to be uninhabited. Moments passed, and you began to wonder if this subject had be already taken care of for the day or worse, escaped.

"Well, knucklehead, are you going to gawk at me or do we have business to attend to?"

The calm voice was a start. Looking closer, you could see dark red eyes at the very top of the cage.

"You know the drill, o-u-t," You tried to sound stern and professional. "Open the cage, kiddo. I've misplaced my key." The creature inside was unfazed and uninterested in your hoax.

Opening the cage, the cat-like creature gingerly jumped down to the floor in front of you. Glancing back in your direction, she glared.

"Hurry up, knucklehead, I have a busy schedule to keep. As do you."

Just as you thought, this subject was a common Darkonite. You marked it down in the corresponding section on the sheet. You had never really seen one in person, but they're a very well-known species. An unpredictable, grumpy house cat. Not the most exciting, but maybe the most visually interesting. You had heard these creatures were born from the Asmodeus zapper, always sterile, and able to live with part of their brain exposed. Cool stuff.

"You’re gawking again, knucklehead. How do you even get paid?" She squinted. "Most annoying."

Looking up, she had already jumped up onto the table. The electronic collar around her neck locked firmly in place. A red light shined bright in the blinding white room.

"So what's the deal? Cloning me for a quick buck?" She yawned.

"You got it." you said, placing her on the slab. "No funny business, I have the controls for your collar. You'll be shocked when you become disorderly. The more you act up, the worse it gets." Again, she was disinterested in your formal monotone.

"Oh, you humor me!" She smiled a toothy grin "I've been through this before. Five times, I believe. You'd know that if you actually read the paper, knucklehead."

You weren't sure if this was a trick or a fault in the creatures’ brain. Her papers said nothing about her, not even her species. It's as almost as if she had never been here before. Never been changed. You figured she was lost in the system. Something that was not all that uncommon, but still.

"Knucklehead, let’s go." rang a bored tone.

In all honesty, you could have shocked the cat, but that seemed inhumane. All Darkonite are born from the zapper already, and besides, she's probably suffered enough. You looked into her eyes as the glass lowered around the pedestal. It closed with a hiss.

"Looks expensive and different from what I've seen before." She glanced up into the high dome.

"It's new set of machines for testing and cloning. Now, please, do me a favor and make this as painless as possible. Please sit still as much as you can throughout the cloning process."

"Your wish is my command." Her voice sounded much more sinister than before.

Upon hitting several buttons and pulling a few levers, a whirring sound began to build from deep in the rooms’ center. As protocol dictated, you headed into a safe chamber and waited for it to begin to read the results. You allow the other chamber to go through the cleaning program for later use. Within a few minutes, the computer read the data, ready to begin.

You pressed the button.

Nothing happened. Lights began to flash and sirens began to sound. After a brief investigation, the other container was found to have a leak. The cleaning solution accidentally poured into the first containment cell. Looking through the glass you were sure that the cat would be dead from the exposure to the harmful chemicals, especially with an open brain. Quickly, you commanded the machine to vent the solution. Hopefully, the specimen was still alive, and her life wouldn't be deducted from your pay.

Suddenly, the room was filled with a blinding green glow. The adjacent room was impossible to see through. Maybe the Darkonite survived? You understood them to be all mutated quite a bit already. Working quickly, you donned the HAZMAT gear to enter the room. The suit was clunky and slightly too big, but you found the button to open the door.

You gasped.

She hadn't even moved.

You walked closer to the chamber. Still she had not moved an inch, and said nothing.

"Hello?" You weren't sure she could hear you through the suit. You couldn't see her clearly from the glowing light, but you were positive she was alive.

"Oh, knucklehead, you just can't do your job right can you?" echoed her voice.

Stepping closer to the machine, a faint sound crackled inside the HAZMAT helmet. As you recognized the sound, you made a realization.

It was the suits’ Geiger counter.

The thick material in the dome walls had melted away. The glow was from what appeared to be radioactive waste that had formed when the cleaning chemicals joined with the active cloning process.

The specimens’ collar lay unaffected on the floor of the dome. She was nowhere to be found.

"Where are you? You're violating protocol by leaving the chamber!" You clamored on a little longer, but to no response.

"’Ooh, I’m violating protocol,’” mocked the specimen, “So says the human who bothered to even look at the machinery without looking for, heh, tampering." Blue eyes gazed down from the rafters. The light from the radioactive wasn't quite strong enough to reach.

The Gieger counter continued to crackle, faster this time. Even with the HAZMAT suit, you didn’t have long before the radiation became dangerous.

"Knucklehead, while you were loafing around, did you not notice that nobody, not one, came to assist you? Not when the alarm was triggered? Where are your friends, knucklehead? Not here, not there, not anywhere. Oh dear, such a shame." The Darkonite laughed.

“She’s right, where was everyone?” you asked to yourself. A possible radioactive disaster sat in this chamber and not a soul had radioed or showed up. You backed away from the dome to the door, hoping that you were truly safe in your suit. You radioed for assistance, but to no avail. The radio static blended with the Geiger noises.

"What have you done?" you asked, worriedly.

"Ensured my freedom, and my escape from this pit." She jumped down with strong thud from her hooved hind legs. "Your little mess-up made this so much easier, though."

You couldn’t believe your eyes. Her species had changed. She now glowed slightly from the nuclear waste from in her dome. The Geiger counter started to crackle extremely fast, becoming painful. You couldn’t last much longer before the radiation became deadly.

"Surprised? Even you should know there are easier ways to get this same result." She grinned. "But now that it's all over, your little pals will be punished for allowing a whole lab of test subjects to escape." She turned away, leaving glowing paw prints as she left.

You stood there, stunned yet relieved. The mocking voice, now distant, echoed around you.

"Don't worry though, knucklehead, I'll make sure you live. You've done me a great favor, I've never looked this good!" Her laugh slowly faded, and so did you.
