Genavi was sent to stop Vinny, the shadow demon.
It was determined, by people or beings unknown, that he has fed too long in our world and must be brought back to the nothingness, his prison. They're not sure that they can keep him from leaving again, but seeing that he has developed fairly dangerous predatory habits has spurred them to at least try. They have a certain responsibility for what he has become.
Vinny was a mistake. They didn't know what would happen to him in the nothingness, but when he died, because his spirit was such a balanced dichotomy of "normal" and "evil", no other afterlife seemed appropriate. He was not altogether unusual, as far as people go, but his feather just didn't tip the scale one way, or the other. So they scratched their heads for a moment and then unceremoniously shuffled him off to limbo. They sent him just short of purgatory, being mindful of how much punishment to apply to his soul, but sometimes they forgot just how effective the realm of nothingness could be.
He changed quickly and, before they even realized it was a possibility, his powers manifested and he vanished. Some wanted to let him go. It was not a normal occurrence for someone to escape limbo, and they felt they should study the situation. But then the spirits that he preyed on started showing up at the back door and they knew they had a problem.
Genavi was one of his victims, with the rarest outcome. He fed on her subconscious shadow and it ended up killing her, but it also "cured" her. She was left with one of the purest souls they had ever seen, and they deemed her worthy of their trust, going so far as to give her some of their own powers and making her one of them. Then they sent her back to the living realm with the order to track down the shadow and bring him back to limbo, where they would devise some kind of cage to trap him once and for all.
She accepted her duty dutifully, but finds herself curiously conflicted when it comes to the orders she has been given. Vinny killed her, but he also gave her a tremendous gift. And somewhere in the thinning remnants of her more human thought process, that causes her to feel grateful to the shadow. She's not sure she wants to bring him back just to get him locked up in a limbo prison. She tries to remain at a distance, stopping his kill if she can but never revealing herself. She's afraid to confront him directly because she knows he would be persuasive. She is also completely unaware that limbo - and the act of putting him there by her masters - is what caused him to become the shadow. He is a monster of their own making, and they did not tell her because they thought she might feel sorry for him.
It will be an interesting moment when they finally confront each other. Until then, she does the least she can to stop him, and he remains frustrated by an unseen force.
