Saturniidae (Family): Giant Silkworm and Royal Moths

"Saturniidae, commonly known as saturniids, is a family of Lepidoptera with an estimated 2,300 described species. The family contains some of the largest species of moths in the world. Notable members include the emperor moths, royal moths, and giant silk moths." (Wikipedia)

Includes Luna Moths (and other "Moon Moths"), Atlas Moths, Comet Moths, Emperor Moths, Imperial Moths, Io Moths, Emperor Moths, Rosy Maple Moths, Polyphemus Moths, Cecropia Moths (the largest North American moth!) and thousands of others.

As adults, they are often fuzzy, with large wings and antennae, and have "eyespots" on their wings. Additionally, as adults, they do not have digestive systems; once emerging from their cocoon, they survive for about 1-2 weeks.

While larvae do spin silk, this family does not include the domesticated silkworm moth (Bombyx mori), which is the primary source of commercial silk production.
