Aletheia was kidnapped and sold at a young age, and due to the mishandling of the kidnappers, she lost her sight. The prophecy was told to the buyer that she would be a greatly powerful psychic and would make him a lot of money and save him from his enemies. She was bought for this reason and to be a playmate for his daughter who was only two years younger. Aletheia started training with the prophecy teller at the age of 8, who taught her many ways to read the future but also how to get around easier with being blind. Being a hawkmoth, she was able to use her echolocation to "see" things around her.

Nikara, the daughter, was always kind to her and they grew to be good friends. Nikara was the saving grace that held Aletheias sanity together when she lost her mentor because she failed to tell her a dream that seemed too unrealistic. When Nikara turned 15, she was shipped away to a boarding school for protection from her fathers enemies, and Aletheia lost the only person she was close to.

In Nikaras absence, her adoptive father asks for her advice about many deals he plans to make with many types of people. This goes on until Aletheia turns 19, which is missed by Nikara due to being at boarding school and only coming home for the summer. Aletheia tells her father to take the weapons deal knowing that he'll be caught in only three short days and that would mean her freedom.
