The Snow FairyBy Claude McKay

Throughout the afternoon I watched them there,
Snow-fairies falling, falling from the sky,
Whirling fantastic in the misty air,
Contending fierce for space supremacy.
And they flew down a mightier force at night,
As though in heaven there was revolt and riot,
And they, frail things had taken panic flight
Down to the calm earth seeking peace and quiet.
I went to bed and rose at early dawn
To see them huddled together in a heap,
Each merged into the other upon the lawn,
Worn out by the sharp struggle, fast asleep.
The sun shone brightly on them half the day,
By night they stealthily had stol’n away.

And suddenly my thoughts then turned to you
Who came to me upon a winter’s night,
When snow-sprites round my attic window flew,
Your hair disheveled, eyes aglow with light.
My heart was like the weather when you came,
The wanton winds were blowing loud and long;
But you, with joy and passion all aflame,
You danced and sang a lilting summer song.
I made room for you in my little bed,
Took covers from the closet fresh and warm,
A downful pillow for your scented head,
And lay down with you resting in my arm.
You went with Dawn. You left me ere the day,
The lonely actor of a dreamy play.

Daeerathanea (day-rah-thaa-knee-ah), or Daeera (day-rah>/i>) for short, is a snow faerie of the Unseelie court. The Unseelie court consists of the darkly-inclined fairies. The rule during the Fall Equinox to the Winter Solstice, and weaken during the first light of the Spring Equinox. Because of the mysterious nature of the Fair Folk, not much is known about the faeries of the Unseelie Court. They do not involve itself in outside affairs. They are very proud of themselves and hate being crossed. The Unseelie Court are not always malevolent, but when an Unseelie faerie is forced to choose, they will naturally prefer to harm than help.

Daeera has of course, has good in her, but prefers to be malevolent and chooses to wreck havoc. She likes to talk in rhymes to confuse people and make them look stupid. She giggles every time anyone trips and likes to play horrible tricks on people. She pretends to love men and women, and then cause them heartaches. She loves anything to do with sex and enjoys herself royally when it comes to it. Her laughs maliciously and also, like chiming bells if you listen closely enough. Daeera enjoys to drink and drink well. She knows how to have fun and be the life of a party. She would never, ever want to cause anyone death... because what fun is that if they are dead. She has no use for someone if they cannot live, she cannot cause them anymore pain. Some say her twisted ways became when she was heart broken herself.

**....***..***..***

The skies churned angrily overhead as he walked along the downtown sidewalk. It was starting to get dark outside and a storm was predicted to come through sometime tonight. People ambled around busily, ignoring the oncoming storm, closing up their little local bakeries and boutiques as the pubs and bars starting opening. It was a quaint little town, but the downtown area always seemed to buzz with life, especially at night.

The sunset dipped under the horizon, as it faded and said it's last farewell. For the night was now upon the scene. The storm was rolling in, turning the sky into shades of dark blue and gray. The clouds overhead rippled and for the sun was long gone, for now the moon decided to take it's presence. Snow began slowly to fall. This time, it stuck to the cold ground. The flakes hit the cobblestones in such a rhythmic tune and soon the little flakes covered the sidewalk. The town swallowed the darkness welcomingly, as the lights began to turn on as people quickly rushed in doors. Of course, there are always people too busy right now to begin to clear the white mess.

Daeerathanea felt the cold snow stick to her blue winter coat. She pulled her white hair to the front of her and put her hood up. The snowflakes danced around her in a merrily way and touched her eyelashes, then vanished forever. She turned around to see who else was enjoying this, but realized most people decided to turn in for the night. As she turned back around, and began walked, her presence was known by the crunching of the town's first snow. The first snow came as delight to Daeera, then the wind slithered through the dancing snow and engulfed it with it's power. She faced downward so the sharp wind would not kiss her face. She felt a sting through the air as if winter was now officially here. Just a little further, she thought eagerly. Through her mind, raced a warm chug of hard liquor that would warm the only part of her that was not freezing. The wind howled throughout the streets. The little alleyways that were perpendicular to the main line would gust wind at her, blowing her a little sideways and knocking her off her course. The cold air whistled through her ears and shivered down her into her bones.

She looked up, and regretting as soon as she did for the cold air cut through her eyes. She then realized that she had no idea where she ended up. Confused fell upon here. Her stomach turned and her hands began to sweat under her brown leather gloves. Her chest felt swollen with anxiety. She was lost. The storm gulped the town in a white blaze, she knew she was on the main street, right? She looked around in a panic manor. Relax, she told herself. The storm will pass, and I'll be okay. She did her best to calm down, and then proceed to keep walking a little further. When her she could barely feel her face, she decided to turn into the closest shop. She looked up at the sign, which was absolutely unrecognizable from the storms blizzard. The neon light flickered under the thicket of falling snow. As she reached for the door, she stumbled a bit due to not being able to see completely accurate. Embarrassed, she turned around to make sure no one saw that and proceed inside.

As the turn the knob, the warm air from inside welcomed her frozen cheeks. Suddenly as she entered the room, the door escaped from her grasp and swung entirely open. The storm blew inside and she stumbled a bit from the sudden wind gust. The wind whistled forcefully behind her. Her hood dropped from her head, and landed back. Her white hair danced in front of her as the storm blew on through the door and into the room a bit. She looked up at the rest of the tavern, only to find herself the center of attention. She quickly stumbled to close the door the best she could with her strength and then shamefully walk over to the bar. She sat down with her head bellowed, and tucked her hair behind her ears. As she sat down, the light from the bar complimented her darken skin tone, even though most of her face was written in pink from the freezing cold. Her starlight hair twinkled as the snowflakes began to melt. This showed off her dyed streaks of blue and grey in her white curly mane. Daeera's coat began to dry a bit, so she decided to take it off and put it under her seat. Looking up at the bartender with a faint-fake smile, she ordered, "Gin and tonic, please." and the bartender asked, "Neat?", thinking he was complimenting her order, she exchanged, "Cool!"In a lower voice as he looked into her sky-blue eyes, he said, "Neat means no ice." "Oh. Then yes." Ah, again. What a day, she thought. She rested her face in her palms and leaned forward and sighed. What a day.

Daeera (day-rah) took her hands off from her face and leaned back in the barstool. Her face began to thaw gently as she wiped some of the smudged makeup from her eyes. The wind cut through her like a sharp sword and the presence of the storm was still apparent on her face. She reached back and rustled her hair to shake any last drops of snow out of her hair. A couple drops hit the aged-darkened hardwood floor, and she thought that this was as good as it's going to get. She breathed gently and reached for her glass that the bartender gently placed in front of her on top of a napkin. She gestured a smile, a small gratitude for the work that the bartender performed. He looked back at her in a bit of confusion, and simply went on his way collecting empty drinks and cleaning the counter with a wet rag. Through the dim light, Daeera could see his muscle tone through the white work-shirt. She quickly got lost in thought, as each swipe of the counter meant another flex of his biceps. She leaned forward a bit and placed her arm on the counter where she rested her head on her hand. She appreciated looking at striking men and she developed a smirk. She then returned to a normal sitting pose, and reach over for her drink. She took a little swig from her glass. The warm sensitive of the alcohol floated down her throat. The drink had a distinctive flavor with an aromatic hint of bittersweet pine. The astringent drink made her skin crawl with a twinge of delight. The little white hairs on her arms stood up as she gently set her drink back down on the napkin.

An unexpected low gasp whispered from her lips as she realized that the hair on her arms did not stand up from the drinks powerful tang. She felt a presence behind her that was focusing their attention on her. The force was sharp and tinged her spine. She could feel the force of the energy surge through her body. It's been some time since she has sensed such an aura around her that felt so familiar to her own. After she left her world to enter this one, her enchanted powers began to dissolve into nothingness. The additional time that she was forced to endure in this strange world, the more disconnection she felt from what she use to be. The magic that still survived inside here was only used them every once in awhile to help her through daily tasks, if needed.

Daeera shut her eyes and frowned as she concentrated on using what was left of any magic she still had. She strained her abilities to cast her mind to try to read the familiar energy behind her. It has been some time since she used her powers, and of course, she made a mistake. Darn, she thought in every bit of frustration. What a shit poor excuse for a sorceress. In the world she used to dwell, she used to be so formidable throughout the land and now she can't even place a simple mind reading on someone behind her.

She landed in some woman's mind that was thinking about her escape from the guy trying to take her home. Daeera snickered. She always enjoyed mischief that people caused around her, but only to some extent. She extracted her mind from the woman's and continued to use up her magic to discover out what this source was coming from without having to turn around to make it bluntly obnoxious. Frustrated as hell, she could not place a reading on this. She felt her own energy quickly drain from her own body, as if every muscle became weak. So, she gave up. She felt light headed and placed her pointer fingers on her temple and began to massage them from the strenuous attempt.

Then, a couple seats down from where she was sitting, she heard the faint sound of a barstool creak. She noticed that from the seconds to minutes she spent trying to find the source of energy, she had forgotten to focus if the position changed.

Her eyes widen and she slowly glanced over in near shock. As she slightly turned her head, along with her turn, her long white hair dragged over her left shoulder and fell down towards her chest. She gazed at a man. She thought to herself as her eyes met his. I am looking into hell and I dare not look away. A shock of fire began to dwell inside her and she welcomed every flame of it. For long ago, she was ice made flesh. Even though the mortal world morphed her body into nothing more than a useless shell.

Daeera pulled out her letter-bound notebook that on the front, held a very-large, uncut diamond. The rainbow reflections on the diamond danced around under the tavern's lights. The diamond was carefully lodged right in the middle of the book, and if you listened closely enough...it hummed with energy. She unwrapped the notebook that kept it closed, and opened on the page she left off. There was a pen holder inside the notebook, and she grabbed the blue pen out of it. Daeera pressed down so hardly on the paper, it would have been sure to rip the pages. As she scribbled in blue ink, ... "I don't want to write in full detail, but the past few days have far exceeded my pain threshold. It was so excruciating that even dilaudid and fentanyl touched it for no longer than twenty minutes at a time. There was a strange window of time that the white hospital walls and dull geometric curtain patterns and affirmation of my physical state felt like what was supposed to be happening. I pretended as though it was instead an affirmation of my psychological despair and I felt distracted and exempt from it. Now both of these have intersected and I feel sharp and perfectly sane in a very bad way. I'm sure this will be over soon once I'm out of this haze."
