Plumpy sprawled contentedly on the carpet in the living room, massaging his terribly swollen, soft pink tummy. It was much bigger today than it was yesterday, he thought to himself. He couldn't quite see it, but under his roaming paw, he could feel his belly button threatening to ping off. Plumpy was dreadfully lazy by nature, and so ordinarily, the scene would not have been at all odd or peculiar to look upon.
Surrounding him, however; piled up high as far as the eye could see, were plates upon plates of hot, delicious food. Chicken in white wine sauce bubbled away invitingly, lapping at the steamed asparagus and green beans tossed in butter and breadcrumbs lying next to it. Piping hot lasagna with layers of rich white béchemal sauce cascaded like a waterfall over tender beef mince, fresh pasta and sun-dried tomato sauce. Freshly caught tuna in a herb infused napolitana sauce drizzled deliciously over tagliatelle, sprinkled with the finest parmesan. Seasoned, salty salmon fillets rested against the sweetest little potatoes, smothered in butter and cream cheese, with cucumber and onion salad in a bowl to the side. Grilled kebabs marinated in soy sauce, spices and lemon juice were skewered with bright red, orange and yellow peppers and plump, juicy onions. Bowls of butternut squash soup simmered away, steaming and golden with lashings of cream, and thick, soft buttered bread on the side. Platters of cheese and crackers balanced precariously atop dishes beneath them, decorated with shiny grapes, apples and pears. Pan seared pork chops glittered away, glazed in honey and herbs, with gently steamed broccoli and apple sauce beside them.
In the centre of the feast, an enormous patterned dish overflowed with the dillema's personal favourite; macaroni cheese. Everything had been cooked to absolute perfection. The noodles were soft, the cheese was gooey and hot, the bacon was crisp and salty and the plump, just off the vine tomatoes were ripe and juicy. There was so much food in the room, it was scarcely believable.
Sitting on a scratching tower, at the far end of the room, watching over everything, was a very big, beautiful, bright orange tabby cat. It looked at the pink mass on the floor and smiled contentedly.
“Ouuh, I can't move,” said Plumpy, trying fruitlessly to reach for a toasted crumpet. “Have you seen the butter?”
The tabby cat's smile stretched into a grin; he bowed his head and raised a paw. Suddenly, as if out of nowhere, a little white dish of butter popped into existence on top of Plumpy's tummy. The cat, you see, was enchanted. For what felt like the longest time, he had scoured the lands for a companion he could call his equal, a creature like he, who simply shared his love of food. After eons of searching, he'd found him.
