In Memory of E14

E14 was a eaglet who was born in South West Florida. He was hatched December 19th 2019, the only eaglet of the 2019-2020 season. His parents Harriet and M15 were loving and devoted parents. He was growing on schedule and loved watching his parents do the things that he, one day would need to do. I used to love to see the love in his eyes as he looked up at his parents. It would melt the coldest of hearts

I loved watching him lumber around in his nest, sleeping peacefully in the hot Florida sun. I was happy when his fuzzy grey feathers started coming in. His feet was huge in comparison to his body, all of us in chat called them clown feet. As he grew he began wingersizing, which simply means flapping his wings, gaining strength that would one day send him to the sky, soaring like the magestic creature he was. All seemed to be going great for this eagle family.

However on 1/14/20 viewers noticed blood on his side. At the time there was not much concern, hoping it would resolve. Close eyes were kept on the baby, as bleeding for a bird is serious. As 6:00 approached the bleeding got worse, the sky was getting dark. There is danger and protocol involved in rescuing a Bald Eagle, so they at CROW in SW Florida was forced to wait until light to begin a rescue. Sadly little E14 passed away at 26 days due to serious blood loss and devastated many of his followers, the Pritchetts, the SWFL chat admins, CROW, many people shed tears that day.

The cause of death was first thought to be a fish hook, but upon a veterinarian exam it was a broken blood feather that pumped blood out very quickly. How did it break? Did the parents do it by accident? Did he get it caught on the nest rail? We will likely never know. What we do know is, that the baby eagle had been poisoned with rodentcide. His parents unknowingly fed him a mouse that had been poisoned by a irresponsible person. Poison kills not only the rodent, but anything who eats it. Please do not use poison. There are humane traps or if you must poison, use a TARGET poison that kills only the rodent.

I will miss that little rascal as I know many of us will. May he rest in peace with E3 and E5 his half siblings. Fly high my little poopah.

MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS ARE THAT IT SUCKS THAT THIS BABY HAD TO DIE BECAUSE OF GOVERNMENT RED TAPE. SAVE THE ANIMAL FIRST, THEN SETTLE THE LAW PART.
