The Rock Head Pokemon
"Bagon has a dream of one day soaring in the sky. In doomed efforts to fly, this Pokémon hurls itself off cliffs. As a result of its dives, its head has grown tough and as hard as tempered steel."
-Pokedex, Pokemon Omega Ruby
Bagon harbors a never-ending dream of one day soaring high among the clouds. As if trying to dispel its frustration over its inability to fly, this Pokémon slams its hard head against huge rocks and shatters them into pebbles.
-Pokedex, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire
Bagon experienced a familiar moment of weightlessness, followed abruptly by an even more familiar lurching drop toward the unforgiving ground. He thought that he had maybe heard a noise before the wind had drowned everything else out, something like one of those humans' screams? But then he was much too busy flapping his stubby arms to pay attention to anything else.
For all of his hopes, he was actually quite surprised when he stopped falling much earlier than he should have. He blinked a little bit and stared down at where the ground was definitely still far, far away. He waved his little arms some more, and watched as the ground moved away and he began to ascend back up into the air. Bagon squealed and flailed and tried to will himself across the great cavern, but instead he just continued to rise. Confused, he look up, only for his heart to sink lower than the stone on the ground beneath.
A Crobat had grabbed Bagon by the back, and now it carried Bagon back toward the cliff where he had started. His little body went limp in defeat, and he barely noticed when the Crobat finally dropped him on the ground. He laid flat on his face, sniveling, until he felt something warm touch the side of his face.
"Hey, there, little guy. No need to go throwing yourself to your doom. What's wrong?"
Bagon tilted his head just far enough so he could side-eye human Girl Trainer. He sniffed one more time, then rolled until he was able to get his feet under himself. He was a wild Pokémon, and not fluent in their strange Human ways of speech, but enough Girl Trainers and Boy Trainers and all kinds of Other Trainers came to Meteor Falls for him to know basically what she meant. He raised his head to stare mullishly at the Crobat from before and pointedly jabbed one of his claws at where it currently hung from one of the stalactites.
The Girl Trainer blinked at him, then turned to look at the Crobat. "You're... mad at Carmilla?" she said, sounding baffled.
Bagon narrowed his eyes, but nonetheless nodded. He wasn't sure what a "Carmilla" was, but since she seemed to be talking about the Crobat he was willing to indulge her strange human ways. When the Girl Trainer continued to stare at him, he began to flap his arms some more just like the Zubats and Golbats that populated Meteor Falls.
"I really don't know what that means," the Girl Trainer said, but at least she had the decency to sound sorry about it.
Bagon huffed and jabbed a claw at Crobat again, and then slowly flapped his arms some more. The Girl Trainer looked moments away from telling him again how much she could not comprehend his very obvious clues, but then her eyes suddenly lit with understanding.
"You want to fly," she breathed. Bagon bobbed his head, torn between pleasure that the Girl Trainer had finally understood, and the crushing disappointment of yet another failure to achieve his dream. The Girl Trainer smiled and reached out, plucking Bagon off the ground and pulling him up against her chest. "I tell you what: if you come with me instead of throwing yourself off of any more cliffs, I promise that one day, you'll fly."
Bagon gaped at her for several long moments, but when none of her confidence dimmed he closed his mouth. Could she really promise that? But then, what did he have to lose? He looked over at the cliff--his last hope in Meteor Falls--then stared the Girl Trainer in the eyes. One last chance, he thought, and nodded.
Days, weeks, months, years later, a Salamence spreads its wings and soars.
