It happens every time. It's a curse. The grocery store curse. Anyone who walks through those automatic sliding doors is bound to the same fate. They will wander the isles aimlessly. They will poke and prod at the fresh produce and baked goods. They poke and prod only because they've seen others do it, they themselves aren't sure why. Were the kiwis supposed to be soft or hard? Were the pumpkins supposed to sound hollow or solid? Oh, yes this is the first stage of the grocery curse - madness.
The next stage is all about time. They think that buying just bread and cheese would only take a few minutes (after all they know what isles to look in). But that is not the case, the moment they enter the grocery store their internal compass and internal clock stop working. They can't remember if the cereal isle is on the left side or the right so they start at one side and work their way over. It's all a trap. Time passes so quickly and what should have taken five minutes becomes 10, 15, 20, or even 30 minutes.
It's be be expected that they would spend more than necessary. That sort of thing happens in most stores, so it is not the third stage of the grocery curse. The third stage is much more sinister. It takes pace after they've exited back through those sliding automatic doors. It strikes when they arrive home and begin to unload those paper and plastic bags full of all those things that they did and didn't need. They unload the broccoli, eggs, sausages, and lettuce only to realize that there are a few things... missing. Hastily they check their receipt only to find it isn't there. The items from the list, the items they went to get, they were forgotten.
That is the true curse of the grocery store. You never remember to buy the few things you went for.
