As the final soaring note of the solo echoed through the ballroom, the audience burst into a crescendo of applause. I bowed slightly in acknowledgement and then quickly departed from the platform tightly grasping my flute and trying to hold back the tears that threatened to make an appearance. People crowded around me, greeting me with congratulations and praise. "Princess Creselda your solo was beautiful!" "Such a lovely song!" "Please play another!" I thanked them with fake smiles and politely excused myself from the conversations as soon as etiquette allowed. Even as I had briskly walked the halls, I had to hold my composure so the guard wouldn't think twice about my presence. The tightness of my chest was no relieved until I had escaped the royal celebration and all of its guests and retreated into the relative safety of my bedroom. I set my flute on its stand and threw myself onto my bed, letting out the silent tears that had been trying to escape during my performance. I couldn't do it anymore. Music was the last thing I had, and now my mother had made it another one of the many talents for her to brag about to her friends. "See my daughter, Princess Creselda? Such a talented young lady. She takes after me. Talented in the arts, music, and dance, and proficient in all areas of study..." I can't take it anymore. Ignoring my responsibility to return to the party, I shed my party gown and reached deep into my wardrobe until I grasped a rough fabric. I quickly changed and glanced in the mirror. Staring back at me was no longer Princess Creselda, but a ragged teenage boy with a feminine face partially hidden by a old cap. Before the guard could come check up on me, I dashed out the window and down the thick vines that gripped the walls of the castle. I sneaked over the castle wall by climbing a tall oak tree and dropped down on the other side. I reached down and smudged a handful of dirt over my face and arms to help hide my identity and then set out for Seven Eleven East. The streets were quiet as I wandered through the upper class neighborhoods. The streetlamps cast long shadows over the paved road and partially illuminated the faces of the Noble's Mansions. As I continued, the manicured landscapes began to degrade and the houses began to get smaller and worn. The intervals between streetlamps increased and the pavement slowly gave way to packed dirt cobblestones. Music from the local clubs and bars faintly filled the silence along with the slow trickle of people bustling around the Lower City. The smell of garbage and animals and alcohol filled the air, but in a way it was a soothing change from the stale castle air laced with the perfumes of the guests. At the thought of the party I felt anxiety rise in my chest. I quickened my pace until I had reached the narrow doorway of Seven Eleven East. I pushed past the early crowd of drunks and dancers until I reached the bar ordered a drink. The bar tender was quick and didn't ask questions, and most of the crowd was decent. A few bars down the road were perhaps cheaper or more popular, but I didn't want to be seen. The glass was cool in my hand while the alcohol burned my throat. Despite the bartender diluting the drinks, after a few rounds I was feeling significantly better.I don't know if it was the pounding headache or the
