Story

Khaos woke up suddenly. It was dark, but he knew there was something wrong instantly. As his eyes accustomed to the dim light, he remembered, something..he wasn't sure what exactly. A scuffle, someone dragging him. Then it went blank. "My orb!! Where is my orb?!" Khaos panicked and scrabbled around the floor. He couldn't find it anywhere. He sat on the floor, dejected, and confused. After a while, he crawled around to get his bearings. A cell, he was in a cell. He felt the coldness of the stone floor and walls, and a metal door. Khaos had no idea what to do next. Without his orb, the ancient sphere that never left his side, he was powerless.

Click clack, along the corridor. He heard someone coming. He tensed up, heard the rattle of keys. Someone stood before him. He squinted as light filled the cell. "At last, we have you. Your kind are not supposed to wander free. You will not escape this time". The words came from a thin, odd looking man, with wire-rimmed spectacles and eyes that looked like they had seen too much.

"What do you mean? What's going to happen to me?" Khaos asked of his captor. "Please just let me go!" The man inhaled sharply. "Never. You are not safe to be in the outside world. You will remain here, where we can...keep you under control." Khaos felt the panic rising again. He wondered if he could barge past the man and run for it. But then where to go next? Khaos had no idea where he was. He knew he needed time, time to find out more about the place he had been imprisoned in. He would wait, until he knew he could get away.

The man threw something on the floor and slammed the door shut. Click clack of his shoes as he walked away. Khaos felt his way to the object on the floor. His hope of finding his orb vanished as he realised the object was just food. He threw it across the room, angry at his predicament. "Food. Pfft, I don't need food. I need my orb!" He muttered to himself, his anger building. His thoughts turned to how he would deal with his captor. He had many images flashing through his mind. Oh, the things he would do...but it must wait, it must wait.

Khaos lay down and tried to sleep a little. He knew he would need his energy for later. He slept fitfully, half remembering the struggle from the night before. But not enough details, his mind just couldn't provide him with answers. Then he heard more footsteps. Not the same as before..softer. His door opened again, and there stood a young woman. She had a small tray with a syringe and swabs on it. She looked nervous. "Um, hello there!" She coughed, anxiously. "My name is Leta. I have come to take some blood for the lab to..umm..do some tests on. I trust you won't give me any trouble?" It wasn't really a question, more of a plea. Khaos smiled, and offered his arm. "Please be gentle" he said, while thinking to himself how he could use this young woman to help him. She worked quickly, and soon filled a small vial with his blood. "There, all done. That wasn't so bad was it?!" She coughed nervously again, and quickly left.

He decided then, that Leta would be his ticket to escape. He would befriend her, make her understand the injustice of his imprisonment. Maybe she would even help him, act as a decoy, or something to aid his break for freedom. As the days, and nights passed, their friendship began to take shape. Khaos used all his charm to convince her that he shouldn't be there. She listened to him as he told her of his family, how they would be terrified, not knowing where he had gone. She even sneaked him some extra food, which was completely against the rules. He knew the time was coming, he must confide in her and make a plan. Soon, soon....

Khaos decided next time she came to see him, he would tell her. He would plead, beg, do anything it took to get her to help him. He was sure it would work. Well, almost sure. He was getting anxious, when he heard her footsteps approaching his cell. He put on a smile, just for her. She smiled back. "Hello, and how are you feeling today?" she asked. "To be honest," Khaos replied, "I need to talk to you. I know you understand how wrong it is that I have been imprisoned here. I must try to get out, to get back to my family. But I cannot do it alone. Leta, I need your help. I am begging you, please help me. I cannot stay here any longer, you must know that. There is one way you can help me. I need my orb. I don't know where they took it, but I must have it. Please, will you help me?" Khaos really was begging, but he didn't care. He looked intently at her face. Her smile had gone. She looked very unsure. "Please!!!!" pleaded Khaos. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

Then, without warning, she turned around and walked out of the cell. She slammed the door. Khaos was horrified. Had he ruined his chances of escape? Had he underestimated his friendship with Leta? He almost wanted to cry. He sat, confused and angry.

A short while later, Khaos was surprised to hear footsteps again. So soon? Leta opened his door and quickly stepped inside. This time, for the first time ever, she closed the door with her still inside the cell. He looked up at her. Her face looked soft again, not like earlier. She smiled, and from her pocket, she produced...his orb! Khaos could hardly believe it. "YES!" he shouted, jumping up. "I knew you would help me Leta, I knew it!". He grabbed the orb, without even a thank you. In his hands, it began to glow faintly. Leta stood back and watched. He let the orb fill his body with its power. He felt it surging through him...and oh god, it had never felt so good, he thought to himself. "Now", he said to Leta, "now you will know the true power of my orb!". He moved toward the door, holding the orb aloft. "Invisibility, be mine", he commanded. Sure enough, he disappeared from Leta's sight. He moved through the door, as if it wasn't there. She opened the door, and followed him a short way down the corridor.

As they approached the next door, Khaos spoke again. "Leta, I wish you could understand the true power of the orb. But you are too weak, too feeble a race to ever be able to comprehend what I can do. You are not worthy to even breathe the same air. You are nothing but a foolish human!" Leta smiled to herself, and opened the next door. She stopped and said "Please, show yourself to me one last time. I wish to gaze into your face, before you leave here forever. I have done as you asked, and helped you. Please grant me that one last wish!" Khaos considered it for a moment, and grudgingly admitted to himself that she had helped him, what harm could there be in it? He spoke to the orb. "Invisibility, be gone." And he appeared before Leta, one last time. She moved toward him, her eyes never leaving his face. She stood, right in front of him, and leaned in close to whisper in his ear. "You will never leave this place alive. You foolish, arrogant creature."

Khaos staggered back a little, confused by her words. At that moment, she quickly produced the knife she had concealed in her jacket. She thrust it into him, then withdrew it and stabbed him again, and again. "Die, you evil monster!" she screamed at him. Khaos fell to the floor, moaning. "Five long years I have waited for this moment! You murdered my family, took away everything that I loved. I vowed to join The Movement, and help track you down. Once you were captured, my reward was to be the one to take your life. I knew you would trust me, I knew your arrogance would mean I could lure you into my trap". Khaos' orb rolled out of his hand as he lay dying on the floor. "M-m-my orb. I m-m-must have it...." he groaned weakly. He reached for it, but Leta was too quick. She stamped down on the orb, with all her strength. It smashed into a hundred pieces and Khaos screamed. "No, no, no!" Leta laughed, and bent down close to Khaos' face. "Your race will now end. Your orb is broken, and now their leader is dying, your entire race will die - they cannot survive without you. The humans have won! No more will your kind terrorise the Earth. No more murders will you commit. You have no family, you never did. Do you think I don't know anything?! You lied, and your arrogance is your downfall. The evil is OVER!"

A few hours later in The Movement's headquarters, the radio crackled. The newsreader spoke.

"Date: November 26th 2010. The day the humans won back the Earth from the Aeanoids. With the death of their evil leader, Khaos, and the loss of his powerful orb, the war is over. Time to rejoice, my fellow people. We have won, we have won! Celebrate, fill the streets! The humans are free, we are free!!"

Leta sat back in her chair, closed her eyes, and smiled. Her work was done. Her world was safe.
