I want and I want and I want
my pricked fingertips—
along with every birthday card I ever received
—not to say “I’m proud of you,”
as to tout my brilliance
from years passed,
like reading by a neon sign’s afterglow
(eyes straining on the headlines of failure)
But to instead read
“You’re doing your best.”

And nothing feels as good as
having that bruise pushed,
kneading that muscle
with thumbs sore from embroidering too hard
and too frantically
and missed needle eyes.
I want for my wounds
to cauter from blistering
rays of sun.
It would be a joy, to feel the threadbare
yoke of sleepy, weepy innocence
cradle me down.
