The Karkadann's scream shook the air again; Ko turned his head and saw three men hurrying forward, two of them carrying an empty cage and the third a wriggling, yelping sack. Ignoring the Karkadann, the men set the cage down and dumped out something small, furry, and sand-colored.
It was a Huli-jing, a cat-sized fox with enormous ears, a red bib around its neck, and a tiny flame on the tip of its tail. The Huli-jing were shy and timid - at most they could conjure a wheel of floating flames, and do simple illusions that allowed them to hide. They lived in fields, eating fruit and vegetables, never harming another living thing.
