Two hundred a week minus dings.

You've got three uniform shirts, four undershirts. Can't afford more yet and you ain't got nowhere to store more clothes anyway. Sweated through your whole damn duffel in the summer heat. The moms and dads of this Oklahoma armpit of a town wrinkle their noses if they get too close, but what can you do? Sponge baths in the public restroom of the park only get you so far and you can't bum a ride to the local coin laundry 'til Monday when you all got time off in the morning.

Two hundred. Bunkhouse is just one more ding. One more luxury you can't quite afford, so you sleep on the floor of your joint. Keep it downlow, though, 'cause the local Fairboard Fancies have made that against the rules now. Guess they think carnies is just made of money, or else they wanna pretend their fair's "clean" like half the people workin' there ain't homeless and hopeless.

Saving up your wages. Got a kid to feed back in Sarasota. Got a lot of debt. Got a problem with drugs the higher-ups pretend they don't know about so long as you work your joint and don't cause problems. Got a lot to do to shake off your bad choices.

Last stop the lotman fucked you. Dropped your joint right between the donniker and the dunk tank. Shit on the left, cackling jackass on the right. Not this time. Got a good spot right below the big wheel. Hasn't helped much, though. All you're getting here is a bunch of locals trying to start shit. Like they walked in thinking they could drop twenty bucks and have the whole damn midway handed to them. Either that or it's a bunch of Jesus freaks fresh outta church. You try and sell 'em a game and they drag their kids away like you're still wearing your damn prison jumpsuit. Either way the locals of this town are damn rude.

You try to remind yourself that for a lot of these kids coming in, this is as close as they'll ever get to Disneyland. You try to remind yourself that this whole show is damn special for them, and it ain't so hard to remember when they light up like a Christmas tree when you hand 'em their prize. Maybe the grown-ups suck, but fuck 'em.

Two hundred a week. Sleeping on the floor isn't the worst thing you've done. Walking two miles at the end of a fifteen hour workday might be close. But what else can you do? There's only one place open at 1am in this pissant town and that's the gas station, and it's not like you got a car. And it ain't like you're walking alone, anyway. There's a lot of you going there for dinner every night and you might not be friends but you got something in common at least.

Sometimes you think about trying to settle down somewhere. Where, though? How? Your ex don't want your scraggly ass around, and your family don't talk to you anymore. Not a lot of businesses willing to hire a felon, anyway. Besides, you know in your heart you belong on the midway. Every time you lift your head to see if the wheel's lit, every time you here a girl scream on the Ring of Fire, every time you catch of a whiff of cotton candy on the wind. That's when you know you're with it.
