The Beginning of a Legend

"Rex! Get down here it's bathtime!"
The small chameleon pulled back it's lips and snarled like a dog.
"Don't make me come up there!" Makayla put down the water bucket and stretched her paws out around the tree, almost instantly her claws dug themselves deep in the fresh trunk.
It was miraculous, how fast she could climb. Actually, it was miraculous how fast and how precisely she could do anything. The chameleon huffed as Makayla scooped him up with one swipe sending him over her head safely on the platform of her back. He slumped over and stuck on the rocklike structures to make sure he wasn't in danger of descending to the ground before he could do so safely. This might have only been the one letdown in Makayla's life, as much as she tried to forget about it, or at least accept it, the lumps on her back would not let up. She's had them since she could last remember, they sat right behind her shoulder blades, constantly rubbing them, and really proved no purpose than a saddle for Rex to ride on when they ventured through the forest. That wasn't the worst part though, as Makayla grew older the pain nestled inside grew too.

"I had another dream last night, I saw the Queen again, she is really quite beautiful you know." Makayla sighed and dunked Rex's head under the water.
"The whole kingdom is beautiful really, the castle, the townsmen, the shops, the crafts." Makayla stopped for a second and stared deep into the forest, a glaze climbed over her eyes and crystallized them.
"We should go to the kingdom today." Makayla turned back to Rex who let out a small squeal of uncertainty.
"I know your curious too, I want to know if it's really like my dreams, they just seem so real."
Rex shook himself off and made his way up on her back, soon enough he was covered by a soft blanket of feathers.

The gates were huge, but unlike she imagined, they were bathed in dead plants and looked lifeless in contrast to the beautiful forest she just stepped out from.
"Humph. Doesn't look like my dreams, I'm still curious, I'd really like to know how we are going to ge-" Makayla lunged to the side of the gate nearly being hit by a carriage that bound through it as if someone was after them.
"Perfect." Makayla smiled as she slipped in right behind the carriage.
Rex cautiously peered out from under the blanket, the town wasn't nearly as bad as the gate, but maybe that's because of all the life rushing about. Small brown stands lined up along the road spread with gorgeous fruits and goods. Rex barked.
"So that's who's been stealing all our fruits." Makayla chuckled looking at a row of exotic sharp fruits painted a beautiful aqua and orange splatter.
Makayla continued down the road awing at all the sites, kits kicking a small ball about, young females weaving elegant patterns in silk blankets.
"Heh, think if that was what we had." Makayla said shaking the feather blanket slightly letting a few fall to the ground. Rex wasn't so pleased about the shake and descended back underneath.
That's when Makayla stopped.
It might have been the most beautiful thing Makayla had ever seen and coincidentally, it looked exactly like in her dreams. The towers stacked magnificently high decorated in gorgeous greenery, contrasting the gate a little too harshly, flowers bloomed from even the smallest cracks. A warm golden glow lifted into the air all around it, wrapping it's pleasing scent around the flags which dangled carelessly with every tickle of the wind. Something else caught Makayla's attention though:
"-and then she was banished out to the forest by the evil princess, greedy to be queen."
"Is she still alive?" an eager young kit pawed the white coat of the storyteller.
Handsome storyteller, you might add. Someone grunted right above Makayla's head, it ruffled her hair with a sudden gust. As quick as the boy's head turned around Makayla fumbled back behind the nearest stand. She looked up to see at least 5 hefty males with angered brows above her. They weren't interested in Makayla though.
"You were told to NEVER speak that story." this voice came from the other side at the stand and Makayla was sure it was directed at the shop boy. "And how many times have you done so?"
"Too many times than you could count, sir." Makayla listened intently from behind the stand.
"You know what we can do to you now, don't you smartass."
"I know what you can try to do."
That comment got them going. Makayla jumped up in front of one of the guards now all armed with arrows ready to shoot at the boy, she kicked back her legs straight at the guards face sending him to the next stand breaking an assortment of glass. That act might have released 3 arrows from other guards barely missing the boy and Makayla. She grabbed his tail tightly in her jaws and whipped him behind her through two other guards. Stunned for a second he he grabbed for the nearest thing to hold on which happened to be a guards leg. Not a good move though considering 2 more arrows flew at them. Makayla felt a load lift off her back and feathers took flight around her, but that wasn't the biggest problem. The shopboy let out a bloody howl as they raced out through the gates.
"Bloody hell, I could have handled that myself!" He sneered as he dragged the arrow back out of his ear as it sopped with blood.
"Handle that? Yourself! Oh how you joke, you could have been killed!" Makayla snapped at him.
"Your not the one who got hurt, your stupid blanket is just cut in half!" The boy wrapped leaves tightly around his ear letting them soak up his blood rather than his hands.
"My blanket is very spec- REX!" Makayla cried out but was stopped before she could even flinch.
"mushucidamal marmh muh?" the boys jaws locked sternly on Makayla's back left leg.
"I need to go get Rex right no- wait, what?" Makayla relaxed her muscles while the boy let back his grip.
"Nevermind that," he coughed, "it's too dangerous, they are ready to kill you, you know."...to be continued.
