Mistralaz really loves to wine and dine his lady friends by candlelight.
A sharp exhale, and his cigarette's smoke joined the other smells in the restaurant. The savory smell of cooked meat, the sweetness of fruit martinis, the creaminess of the night's soup.
The woman sitting across the table from him was undeniably beautiful. Her hourglass shape was highlighted perfectly in the clingy black dress she wore.
She was pleasant enough, with a nice tone to her voice and a bubbly personality. He just couldn't stay focused on this evening with her. Racked with guilt over his sister's disappearance, he tried to put it out of his mind, but failed.
Mistralaz and had recently argued with his younger sister Kamalei. She felt stuck in their home and wasn't happy. She wanted to explore the world and go adventuring on her own. He, on other hand, felt she was much too young, and thought such adventures would put her in needless danger. She had left in a huff, and he was left trying to explain to their baby sister, Channaa, where Kamalei had gone.
The problem, though, wasn't just that she was gone. It felt like a more personal failure.
Mistralaz frequently wined and dined the local ladies. To date, he had yet to find someone to truly love, but he had always enjoyed going out. Good laughs, good times, good food. Even if the relationship didn't progress further than that, Mistralaz had always felt confident that some day, he'd find someone who was really special. He'd craft the diamond he was saving into a beautiful engagement ring for her. And together, they would combine lives and start a family.
After seeing how poorly he handled Kamalei, however, he was beginning to doubt how successful he could be as a family man. It was his fault Kamalei was gone. It was his fault Channaa had to look at him with teary eyes and ask when Kamalei was going to return. If he couldn't even take care of his sisters, how could he possibly look after a future wife and children?
"Mistralaz?" the woman said, a quizzical look on her face. "I said, 'Don't you think the night is beautiful?'"
He let out a deep chuckle and leaned forward. "I'm sorry for making you repeat yourself. You just look so dazzling tonight, I got lost in your beauty."
She giggled and blushed, and the conversation continued easily. He knew his sister was older and more mature than he was giving her credit for. She was responsible for herself, and the only thing he could about it was let her live her life. In the meantime, he could enjoy his life and find his own happiness
