Once Upon a Time...

She was staring in the mirror again. Every morning and every night, she began and ended her day with staring in the mirror. Her hair was getting long again. It was just reaching that point where she started to second guess her want for long hair. As much as she would love to have mermaid hair, once her hair started to hit her shoulders she would remember just how much she absolutely hated having long hair.

Normally her mirror staring sessions were limited to only as long as it took for her to finish her routine. Brush teeth, clean face, brush hair, put in contacts or put glasses on depending on the time of day, deodorant if it’s the morning, one last stare, and then out the door. Tonight, though, it was lasting longer than normal.

It always seemed to come in waves. She’d cut her hair short, into a sort of pixie cut. She’d cut it all off and would be happy for a while, then would find herself growing bored of the lack of styling opportunities that short hair afforded. So she’d stop getting it cut and would let it grow out in hopes of having long hair. And then the hair would hit her shoulders, and she’d start laying on it when she was sleeping and it would get in her face all the time and she wouldn’t wear it any other way than pulling it back into a ponytail. And that would be fine for a while, but then she’d start staring in the mirror, and one day would go out on a whim and cut it all off again. And the cycle would rinse and repeat.

What wasn’t normal this time was the amount of time she found herself staring. Her long hair had to go, she knew that much, but she wasn’t happy with the idea of cutting it to her normal pixie length. She couldn’t identify what it was she wanted to do this time around, but she figured she would know it when she saw it.

And then she did.

It was a normal day like any other, and then all of a sudden it came to her. She had never done this before, never gone this short. And it wasn’t going to just be short. No, she’d be able to keep her fringe that she adored and have the hair off her neck. But this style spoke to her. It wasn’t completely new to her, she’d seen it before and hadn’t really paid too much attention. But now…. Now she knew it was the style for her.

So she spent days finding sources. And when it was finally time for her appointment at the salon, she walked in, sat down in the chair, and told her stylist that she wasn’t just trimming the ends this time. No, this time she was gonna cut it all off. Her stylist was shocked to say the least, and asked her multiple times if this was what she really wanted. And it was, she was positive that she wanted her hair to look this way. So she sat in the chair and watched as chunks of her hair fell to the floor. And even though she’d done this countless times, there was an electricity and an excitement around her that she’d never quite had before.

She was turned around in the chair so that she couldn’t see past the initial cuts. And when her stylist was done cutting, she straightened and styled the new haircut, all the while telling her that this was something completely outside of the norm for a client to ask for. She was excited though, she couldn’t wait to be turned around. So when the stylist finally asked her if she was ready, all she could offer was a nod. She turned around in the chair, and she found herself staring in the mirror.

“Do you like it?” the stylist asked, “I really hope you like it, this wasn’t what I was expecting to do today.”

All she could offer was an amazed nod as she found her hands making their way up to run through her hair. “It’s… It’s perfect.” She nodded again, a large grin breaking onto her face as she turned her head side to side to see as much as she could.

It was everything she’d ever wanted.
