Kolja, the first King of Itas.

Kolja was born the son of Julien, chief of the Bauer Clan. He was born to be chief like his father, and groomed superbly for the role. However, he was all of 21 years when his entire clan was cut down by the advancing armies of the First Valbaaran Empire. Kolja had to learn to survive in the margins, staying out of the eye of the new foreign overlords if he were to live to tell his tale.

It was not difficult for a naturally charismatic man to draw a crowd who shared his hatred of the invaders. They knew the great jado woods of Itas far better than the imperials ever could, and Kolja spent his younger years making the Empire earn their keep in his homeland.

Time gave Kolja both fame and notoriety. It was not hard to find an Itasean who would pledge their blood to his cause, nor was it hard to find an imperial eager to see all of that blood spilled. But Kolja didn't fight with the Valbaaran sense of honor; he fought to survive. Kolja knew better than to ever fight on the Empire's terms. When his name was cursed enough to make it back to the Valbaaran capital, the hammer came down.

It was all Kolja could do to flee. Truly marked for death, he had no choice but to trust blindly those who promised him sanctuary on the home island of Grenvel. What he hoped would be a short interlude dragged on into years in exile, knowing every moment he spent in comfort, his comrades were crushed under the boot of a cruel occupier back in his homeland. Thankfully, enemies of the Valbaaran Empire were not hard to come by in Grenvel. They'd since pushed into the island, though the unforgiving mountainous terrain had begun to grind the Valbaaran invader to a bleeding halt. With the imperials overstretched, undersupplied, and morally drained, there was a great interest in opening a vicious southern front.

Kolja returned to his homeland far stronger than he'd left it. He was welcomed into the city of Itas as a liberator, a man promising to drive out the imperial scourge regardless of cost. He did what no one ever had, he united all of the forest and mountain clans under a single banner with one common cause: Retake Itas.

Kolja would never lead his troops on a battlefield, he would never meet the Valbaarans in so-called "honorable" combat. He drove his blade into his sleeping foes. He burned their camps, he lured them into the dark wood, he forced them to fight on his terms alone. Kolja asked his troops, why kill those you could maim? Why not force them to tend to the mutilated survivors? To cauterize gaping wounds. To amputate crushed and mangled limbs. To send soldiers home with hollowed eyes and haunting tales of dark forests full of spike pits and poisoned arrows.

He became a scourge. A demon whispered of in campfire tales shared between recruits who arrived with fresher and fresher faces. Don't sleep too deeply, lest Kolja and his army of ghosts blow in like a storm and pluck your eyes out where you lay.

When the imperial banner fell, Kolja was there to raise his own. The first King of Itas would live long, far beyond the days when his body failed and withered down to bone. To this day, his skull remains enshrined in the catacombs of the great city that he rose up from the darkness.

The downtrodden and brutalized now whisper of his return. One thousand years past Saint Kolja's death, the oppressed people of Itas call upon the father of their cause once more. With great sacrifice, perhaps- just perhaps- the god of their homeland will return to the mortal plane. And perhaps- just perhaps- his army of ghosts will retake Itas from its eternal nemesis. Listen closely on those cold, foggy nights out in the jado wood. Listen for the march of the eternal army, and stay vigil. For once again comes the man-turned-god, again riding his spectral steed. The king eternal blinks not at rifle fire nor artillery strike. And when again the Valbaaran boot falls upon the neck of his kin, Kolja will return.

Saint Kolja, the God-King of Itas

Artwork (old design)
He's no longer human but I love all this art too much to scrap.
Just know that he looks different now, don't sweat it too much.
