Naesala, also known as King Kilvas, is a Raven Laguz (hybrid of humans and animals) from the continent of Tellius. He is often portrayed as a greedy and self-serving man, thinking only of himself, or how he can benefit financially from a situation. He will often betray those he calls his allies if a hefty sum is paid to him. While this may seem like he is one the world could do without, he is in fact forced to make these betrayals because of a Blood Contract signed by the previous Kilvas ruler. If he doesn't go along with the contract, his people will die. He hides this secret deep inside of him, and takes all responsibility for his actions. His adviser is Nealuchi, a wise old raven who frequently calls him "Nestling", despite him being an adult as well as King. Naesala, although hating being called that name, feels endearment towards the old crow, as well as his country.

A Blood Pact is a contract-of-sorts often used by corrupt senators to control leaders of nations. These leaders are often forced to sign these out of desperation. The one who is in possession of the contract can invoke a curse to the other party's nation if the other party does not do as the holder wishes. As a symbol of the agreement a mark appears on the wrist of the pact makers and sometimes others who are in authority in the nation. If the effect of a Blood Pact is not ended, the mark will be passed to the children of those marked.

Leanne is the princess of the Heron Clan and one of Naesala's childhood friends. Over the years he has become quite protective of her and even has grown feelings for the young heron. However, because of his acts, Naesala doesn't feel like he deserves her, so he hides his feelings deep inside of him. At the end of the war, Naesala confesses his love to her, with Leanne revealing that she had always loved him, no matter what. They were wed, having one heron girl and one raven boy.

Kilvas is the home of the Raven clan, with King Naesala as it's ruler. Known for its piracy, it is perhaps the least liked of the bird clans. However, its reasons for piracy are for self-preservation. Naesala sacrificed respect from his fellow Laguz leaders, Tibarn of the Hawk Tribe and Reyson of the Heron clan to ensure that his people were well taken care of. Part of his country's poverty is caused by a Blood Pact that the previous Raven King signed, and has been passed down to Naesala. In the end, all three tribes were formed into one kingdom, with Tibarn as it's ruler, and Kilvas was freed from it's poverty.
