Moss crept over the temple's walls and entangled itself with the stone, widening the cracks time had opened. Stone guardians decorated the structure - a testament to ancient times - but their features had become eroded, with blunt fangs and chipped ears. The trees around the temple formed a clearing. Branches did not extend past an invisible line in respect, allowing sunlight to descent from above, granting the abandoned temple a glow reminiscent of an awe long since lost. And it was that temple Oqualus looked up at.

Life in the village had never been unpleasant. The opposite, if anything. When her parents realised their daughter was a cyclops, they did everything in their power to make her life comfortable. The last cyclops had not passed away long enough for the whole species to fade into legend, but not recently enough for anyone in Oqualus' village to have seen a cyclops in their lifetime. The stares she received when out in the market were not rude nor discriminatory, but rather of the curious kind and - when they came from children or shameless adults - were generally followed by a question of the "what are you" variety, which Oqualus could only ever answer with embarrassed laughs.

Perhaps due to her own feelings of alienation, Oqualus found solace in exploring the jungle surrounding her village. She never ventured far because of the countless warnings received - both regarding the animals and the mythical jungle protectors spoken of in stories, with their lightning speed and the strength of a million suns. Yet the jungle had been nothing but kind to Oqualus, welcoming her, beckoning her further and further from the village.

It was on one of those trips into the jungle she met the Elder. The events directly following their meeting had happened too quickly and with such excitement that they had become nothing but a blur in Oqualus' memory. The Elder (whose name Oqualus had never quite grasped) spoke of the cyclops' lost legacy as rulers of the jungle - a term Oqualus had never heard before - and urged the young cyclops to continue said legacy. When Oqualus asked how, the Elder merely waived a hand and told her to follow the "defeye". Oqualus did not understand what that meant, but the Elder wasted no time in handing her a sceptre, pointing at a floating green eye surrounded by some viscous material, and nudging her (perhaps with more force than necessary) towards a path Oqualus had never seen before, and was willing to bet had never been there until her meeting with the Elder. The defeye began floating away and, not willing to let such a... unique opportunity pass by her, Oqualus gave chase. The jungle opened itself up the cyclops, silencing animals and separating foliage, driving Oqualus towards the jungle's heart.

Oqualus took a deep breath. She focused briefly on the silence, the solemnity surrounding her, and realised then that the jungle too was holding its breath. She took a tentative step up the first of the temple's stairs. Then a second. Then a third. Behind her, the jungle resumed breathing. Oqualus climbed up the first set of the temple's stairs and faced the jungle once more. Birds squawked and monkeys chirped - they did so softly, their sounds akin to excited whispering. The cyclops' heartbeat too grew excited; she resumed the climb.

Only once she had reached the top of the temple did Oqualus turn back to the jungle. As if on queue, the animals' voices turned from whispers to shouts and cheers. The trees too, mute as they were, appeared to be celebrating. In the distance Oqualus could see faint smoke columns coming from the village - but that was not what she wanted to pay attention to. She briefly wondered if the Elder knew she had reached the temple, but that thought too dispelled with ease. Another deep breath, and she spoke with a voice the jungle had not heard in centuries.

"My name is Oqualus!" She paused briefly. "I am a cyclops, and lay claim, thus, to the title of ruler of the jungle!"

The jungle erupted into a cacophony of roars and squawks and chirps and hoots and so many more sounds than Oqualus could name. A fresh breeze blew and the trees shook. Oqualus knew then, as the jungle welcomed its new ruler, that she had at last found where she belonged; from above, she felt the eyes of the previous rulers looking at her, granting her their blessing.
