Knonsu: Egyptian deity of the Moon.

"Desiring the knowledge of secret things and the dealings in the darkness where his light could not reach, and being a jealous deity, Khonsu challenged Thoth to a game of Senet. As the two were both gods of knowledge, they were masters of the game in their own right, and it lasted for many hours as neither truly wished to lose for the wager was set. If Thoth were to lose, he would give up his secret knowledge (for he knew everything that happened, and knew of the thoughts of man before they reached his lips) and Khonsu would gain which he greedily desired; if Khonsu lost however, he would give up a part of his light. Now, in these times, the Moon was as bright as the sun in daylight, and never changed from day to day. The game finally came to a tense stand-off when Khonsu and Thoth each had only one piece remaining on the board, and neither piece could move unless their die rolled a two. Khonsu rolled a three, and Thoth sealed victory with a two.
And since that day, the moon has grown dim on the nights where Khonsu's remaining light fades, and brighter and fuller as he regains that light again; giving the night a new and changing environment ever since."

Yes, charming. It is always so thrilling to be remembered as greedy and jealous. If it were not for that bet then the world would have one less way to keep the passing of time! I was also much younger, back then. With age does come the ability to look back and see our mistakes. Really why would anyone fault me for wanting to know what happened within the darkness here I could not see?
