Moxie : force of character, determination, or nerve.

No one had more determination than Mama.

At 19, Mama was a wildfire, red hair, striking eyes, and freckled from head to toe.
And I was with her.
They thought at first, that I was a wildfire too.
"Don't worry, it's just your first time being pregnant is all."

But I came and grew, and Mama still struggled with ills.
They said, "Sorry Ma'am. It's Hodgkin's Lymphoma."
But Mama didn't bat an eye, and she went right up to fight.

She battled with Chemo, Radiation, even Bone Marrow Transplants too.
The walls of St.Jude barely knew what to do,
But many of them knew just who I was,
and I heard so often, "You must be Mama's Daughter, you look just alike!"

"Finally!" they exclaimed, "You're free! You're cured!"
But no sooner than they spoke it, they took back their word.
"It returns..."
But Mama didn't bat an eye, and she put up her dukes, and gave Hodgkin's Lymphoma, another fight.

"At Last," They said, "You're free."
And for many years, we all agreed, Mama had won the fight.
I grew and grew, and while things weren't easy for just Mama and me, I grew up right.

Mama found love, and brought love to us with two.
My Siblings arrived and now we showed Mama that we were wildfires too.
People come and go, but our family of four stood resolute.
Mama worked hard, 12 hours a day she remembered the RRT's that saved her life.

And then they said, "Mama, we found an odd lump we'll have to check out."
And there we were, Mama's little wildfires dimming out.
The tune of "Breast Cancer, it seems." had us rather put out.
But Mama's fire never dims, and she always put up a fight.

Again she made it through,
12 hour work days, with chemo on top.
3 kids in school, but she never did stop.
And she always told us, that we were why she fought.

Dear Mama,

Do you know I love you a lot?
I've been by your side, from day one on this crazy ride.
And I have learned more than was thought.
I'm the oldest of your trio, not quite the boldest,
A bit hidden by shadows, but not quite lost.

Do you know you are my hero?
Gentle though I be, I was never taught to flee.
My fists bear no scars, but a fight wouldn't end me.

Differences we sometimes have,
One thing without a doubt,
Mama's got Moxie.
And I do too, as it turns out.

Dear Mama, Do you know I love you a lot?
