She is an interesting one, that Crystalle. I have watched her from afar for many years, only recently becoming more familiar with her presence. In this barren, white world, there are few who can truly survive that do not possess hearts as cold as the land itself. She is one of them and we are glad to share this place with the Ice Witch of the Northern Field.

Truth be told, Crystalle is not really a witch. She is of human ancestry, though the heavy influence of magic in her bloodline has given her and her kind a new classification. I would hesitate to call her a nymph, but it is the closest thing that comes to mind when describing her. She is as tall as a human but levitates naturally, as we Faeries do. Many of her features are similar, though her skin is frosty and her digits long and sharp as icicles. Her voice brushes the ears in a whisper, and sometimes I strain to hear her when she tells me about herself. But I have found that it is worth it, for, as I mentioned before, she is quite interesting.

I cannot say that I fall under the same category. I am but a northern Faerie, one of three clan leaders who makes his home here in Fieg. My kin branched off and emigrated here a couple centuries after the Great Fire of the Mana Tree. There was sanctuary to be found among the snow and the wild monsters mind their own, which provides great comfort to those of us who make a habit of wandering. Not much has changed since I arrived. The land remains still with the exception of an occasional blizzard or two and though humans are known to come exploring, foreign visitors are still scarce.

When I am feeling lonely or contemplative, I seek out Crystalle. She is always in the same place, near the Garden of Icicle Flowers, but lately she has kept all entry to it barred and I am curious. When I inquire as to her reasoning, she is plain with me.

“A human named Nakratos entered our midst some time ago. I was certain you were aware of his presence?” Her eyes reflect the sparkling of the snow in the morning light. Otherwise, she is quite stoic.

“Of course, but he seemed of no importance or threat. I assumed he’d died, looking for whatever it is humans seek out here.” I harbor no particular ill will toward humans; I just don’t see the reason behind much of their endeavors. It has been observed time and time again that they will scour the earth for treasure that does not exist only because someone long ago said it does. The unknown often intrigues them to the point of obsessive madness, something that most Faeries have little concern for.

“I suppose you could say that he has died, in a sense. Did you know he has been here for over a decade? And those years have been hard on him, body and spirit.” She floats upward a little and then back down, her bare, claw-like toes almost touching the frozen ground. A breeze passes, cold and cutting through our mutual silence. Ten years is like a drop of water in an ocean to us. It goes by in half a blink.

“He is there, then? In the Garden?” Crystalle only nods. I sigh, my breath appearing and then disappearing into the thin air.

“Nakratos has taken the form of a large beast, much like Du’Cate who inhabits the deepest part of Rosiotti’s Jungle.”

“I know of the creature. So why has he — this Nakratos — come to us?”

“It seems he had been led to believe that a way to bring back his deceased wife lay somewhere in these snow fields. Alas, I am but a product of the snow myself and my powers are limited. Not even the Mana Goddess could resurrect his wife. It is not Her will to give life to the dead.” With the slow rotation of her finger, Crystalle creates a small eddy of snow, directing it at me playfully. It dances around my face and antennae and I banish it with a wave, giving her a small smile. Her attempt at smiling back is terrible at best, but I take it for what it is.

“What do you propose we do?” Long, purple lashes meet high, pale cheekbones, and then her eyes open, aimed skyward.

“We wait. He has a brother, a mage named Mephianse. Professor of magic at the Geo Academy.”

“And all of this you know, in Nakratos' own words?”

“Yes. Before his mind was completely lost, the poor beast talked quite frequently. I’m not certain he was ever talking to me, but either way, I was listening.” Unsurprisingly, a gentle snow begins to fall. It gathers quickly, and I dust myself off in preparation to leave. “Mephianse will come looking for him. That means more humans may follow.”

“All creatures in Fa’Diel are free to roam as they please,” I say. “Let them come. It is up to the land to lose them or show them the way home.” Crystalle reaches out a long finger to stroke my cheek in what I can only assume is a sign of affection and I give her a less than graceful bow in response. “Until next time, sweet iceling.”

“Indeed.” She turns away, ever watchful of the Garden where a lost soul wanders aimlessly. It is not like her to get involved in the affairs of humans, but perhaps this is her way of making some sort of difference in the world. I hardly feel affected as I fly back toward my brethren. Given enough time, and maybe a little influence from the Mana Goddess, these things have a way of sorting themselves out.
