Those who suffer the flaw of vanity would do well not to study their reflections by the light of the carriage lanterns when passing through Nygium Forest at night. She reigns over every reflective surface that enters her domain.
The locals know of her presence, though they vehemently refuse to speak her name, even at high noon. Their horses will not approach Nytrin Lake for a drink once the sun vanishes from its surface. Their hounds will cease to hunt at twilight. Tucked tails and pitiful cries arise from even the pack leaders, alerting the women that their husbands will soon follow the dogs. Those who must venture out after dark do so with lanterns that can be shaded. The glimmer of light on water, even reflected in a simple rain puddle, warns them to cut the light before it is too late.
When they must refer to her at all, they call her "The Owl". It is true she has the semblance of a majestic bird of prey with powerful talons and shadowy wings feathered in a dappled pattern of ash and onyx. Her eyes are impossible to describe. Are they dark orbs that contain the span of the cosmos or inky pits in which demons swim? Only one man ever dared to meet her gaze and he cannot speak about the experience. His arms are kept firmly pinned to his sides and the villagers dribble warm gruel in his mouth whenever he makes noise. They argue constantly that it would be kinder to set him loose in the forest yet none of them has a hard enough heart to cut the ropes that hold him.
There is a line of trees that they call The End of the World, wrapping the bases in barbed wire and lengths of chain to deter even the most stubborn and stupidest foreigners from venturing further. The Grove is located within that crude fence. Several dozen shattered mirrors hang from stunted trees like so many dangling leaves but these leaves care not for the change of seasons. Only one mirror remains whole, a most hideous piece carved from obsidian and bordered with tiny imps that warn away visitors with gleaming ruby eyes.
There are more legends about The Grove than there are stains on the tavern floor. It was the home of a witch well versed in black magic who broke one of the unbreakable laws and was transformed into a foul creature as punishment. It was once a shrine to a jealous goddess whose beauty was stolen by mortal women. She smashed all but her summoning mirror and called up Alchium to curse the land. To whisper the demon's name would make her appear so that the caller would instantly die of fright, hair turning white as the envious deity reclaimed just a little beauty through cruel means. Some even say she was a plain woman who called on demons when love proved a bitter poison to youthful innocence, becoming a demon herself.
There are those rare few who question whether The Owl may be a force of good, reducing the vermin that are destructive to crops and carriers of the plague. These few are quickly hushed with dirty looks and motions for silence. It does not do to antagonize evil and no force of good comes alive in the shadows of night.
Her name is carved in a boulder that rests beneath the whole mirror with a double-line verse carved in a lost language. No human eyes have read these words in centuries. Only the artist could reveal that their translation runs thus:
Alchium, formed from the merge of blood and shade and bone.
Bear unto your mistress thoughts of fire and words of stone.
