There was a nip in the air and dew drops gleaming on the grass, as the sun climbed the horizon. Wind whistled through the city of trees, rattling leaves and plucking those too weak to hold on. It was a sight of serenity to be sure, but all was not as it seemed. The snap of a twig echoed through all the little burrows and nests nearby, signalling someone that didn’t belong. Brown leather boots and straps, green-dye cloth and a shortbow in-hand; the hallmarks of a huntsman. Upon spying a deer, the hunter slowed his steps and crept down low. As he got closer, he drew and nocked a broadhead from his quiver. With careful steps he avoided further twigs, before finally raising his bow with a deep breath. Tugging at the string, he drew back the arrow and exhaled slightly before loosing it right into the poor deer’s neck. Instantly it reared back and darted off, blood spraying from the wound and arrow still-embedded. Desperately it sprinted for dear life, darting through bushes and over logs. It wasn’t until it reached a hollowed out trunk that it finally collapsed in safety, just barely alive.
