"I think he is waiting for you", the words trembled from the receiver. Time had been cruel and all too quick.

She rapped upon the metal of the old screen door. The humid air making the tears indistinguishable amongst the sweat beading from her brow. "He is in the back", Dorothy looked distraught; more so than usual. The years had withered her mind and fractured her bones, yet this was different. The house was silent. Usually the sounds seized your ears with unrelenting clatter. The humid air left the thick smoke from Marlboro's lingering throughout the house.

Moving to the back of the house, the air instantly felt cooler. I guess that is why they chose to move him there. Despite the crippled joints and sunken eyes, an overwhelming joy encompassed Darty. He always loved to see her. She felt awash with guilt, always regretting leaving him behind. His aged bones were by no means suited for travel. "We hope seeing you will help him." Dorothy sobbed as John walked her back through the hall. She was able to find a seat right alongside him. Gazing up at her, tail wagging, his approval was obvious.

Sitting up, he stretched himself across her lap. The heat must have been unbearable, but he did not seem to mind. Her fingers laced deeply into his woolen fur, knowing just the place to scratch. Instantly his head rested upon his paws and he was awash with relaxation. Every touch revealing the masses riddled beneath his skin. His thick fur masked the true progression of the disease, the cancer thriving slowly for years, robbing him of his once youthful disposition. Hours passed, only lifting his head once for a cooling lap of water. In the calm, seemingly they both fell asleep.

Shaking her shoulder, Dorothy stood over her, a solemn look upon her face. Dart still lay in her lap, peaceful yet....still. It seems, he had just been waiting to say goodbye.

See you on the other side, Old friend.
