Simon had been with his partner David for almost 4 years, and they were still very much in love. David thought Simon had some cute quirks - the way he always ran his fingers through his hair when nervous, and the silly things he said. Simon worked at the local bar, and always rode his precious motorbike. When not working, he would be tinkering outside with his bike. Aside from David, that bike was the love of his life.
Tuesday night, 6pm. Simon was ready for work. He said his goodbyes to David; a kiss on the forehead, and his usual parting words - 'take care of you', followed by a cheeky wink. David hated when Simon rode his motorbike in bad weather. It was raining, hard. He sighed and went to bed.
Wednesday morning, 1am. A knock at the door. Two policemen, with the terrible news that David had always dreaded. Simon had been hit by a lorry on the way home from work, and was on life support at the hospital. David got there just in time, he had time to say goodbye, and time to agree to donate Simon's organs. Being his next of kin and agreeing to donate at least gave him some sense of something good coming from something so tragic.
Andreus was asleep in his hospital bed when the nurse woke him. 'We have a donor for you, love. We need to get you prepped now! Your girlfriend is on her way here'.
Andreus had been sick for a long time, and needed a new heart. Today would be his lucky day. Julie hugged him tight, and told him to get strong enough to come home soon. She missed him, terribly. His health had deteriorated over the last 3 months, and most of that time had been spent in hospital.
7 weeks later, and Andreus was doing well. His body had not rejected the new heart, and his health was improving daily. One thing played on his mind though - who had given him the heart. He began to make enquiries with the hospital, and eventually a meeting was set up with the partner of the deceased. David was unsure if he wanted to meet, but also felt it might bring him some comfort. Julie was very keen to meet him - she had noticed some changes in Andreus since his new heart was put in. Andreus put down his motorcycle magazine and they both headed to the waiting room.
Andreus and Julie sat on one side of the table, anxiously waiting. Simon nervously opened the door. 'Hello' he said - they both stood up and offered their hands in greeeting. 'My name is David, and Simon was my boyfriend. He was 25, I am 29. We had been a couple for almost 4 years and we lived together in Washington. I'm not sure if there's anything you would like to know? Please ask if there is'.
Julie cleared her throat. 'Words are hard to find. The gift Simon gave to Andreus is priceless. I don't think thank you is good enough, but we want you to know how eternally grateful we are - but are also acutely aware of your loss'. Andreus ran his fingers through his hair. It did not go unnoticed by David. He spoke quietly to David, 'Are you able to tell us how he died?' The reply was soft - 'A motorbike crash' There was a big storm that night, the rain was heavy, the lorry slammed into the side of him.' Julie and Andreus bowed their heads. Andreus thought of his sudden strange urge to read motorcycle magazines, and how he had resisted the urge to buy himself a bike - so far.
Running his fingers through his hair again, Andreus told David of the strange connection he felt to motorbikes - something he had never been interested in before. The whole situation was becoming too much for David and he stood to leave. 'I wish you a good, long, happy life Andreus. Stay safe out there'. Julie leant over to hug David, and thanked him for coming. Andreus stood up, and as David was heading through the door, he had an irresistible urge to speak. 'Hey!' he said. David looked over at him. 'Take care of you', Andreus said, and winked. Although he had no idea why.
David inhaled sharply, and turned to leave. Under his breath, through his tears, he whispered 'Goodbye Simon. I'll always love you'.
