Scruffy, the terrier poodle.

You would barely be up the front steps, somethings only at the drive way when you would hear it. The loud barking of what would sound to be a very big and angry dog. But when you opened the door, it couldn't be more of the opposite. A small and very happy puppy greets you, usually by jumping on your legs when all you want to do is be left alone, but his excitement usually could persuade most people into giving in and petting or playing with him.

I got my dog when I was 13. I didn't want a dog, in fact, I disliked dogs immensely. I was terrified of them, always had been since I was little. There was no catalyst, no event that started my dislike I just never was comfortable around them. I remember my parent's going out but not telling me where, and when we returned there he was, a new puppy for the entire family. A terrier-poodle to be exact. I wasn't too pleased, especially since he spent the whole night barking loudly.

Eventually my parents gave up trying to make him sleep in a kennel and let him sleep on their bed for the night, and then onward for next 5 years...

We named him Scruffy. Because we were never a very original family, and felt it was easier to name him based on a describing adjective. He was scruffy though, and when his coat grew long, he looked more like a walking mop than a dog.

And even though I started out disliking this dog, he grew to be my best friend. It's such a cliche, dog being man's best friend but it's one of the truest. Even though there was those times he would drive me insane (like the time he peed on my brand new hoodie...) I loved him, everyone did.

I'll never forget waking up that morning and immediately knowing something was wrong with him. He was so slow, and at times he would shake and seem like he was in pain. This had never happened before, he'd never had any problem and was only 5 years old. He wouldn't even take a treat from me.

I was the only one home and those hours alone seemed to go on forever, there was nothing I could do for him. When my mom got home, she could see something was wrong too. After a little while we made the decision to take him to vet, where they x-rayed him and gave us some medicine and said to keep an eye on him. He wasn't able to move at this point, and we could tell he was in so much pain.

When I woke up the next morning, only my dad was home. Apparently, by the morning he had only gotten worse. There was something about a broken disc in his back or legs, I can't remember, and he couldn't walk, and could barely function, and there was no way to fix it. On July 7th, 2010 I lost my best friend in the world. Even when writing this I'm crying.

I had made this pet years before, about 3 years ago before he ever passed. I've decided to keep this pet, even though it makes me sad too look at sometime, but I want to remember the one person in my life who never let me down and I always will. :)
