- Lead singer and founder of the band Space for Rent, alongside his younger sister Rosie and childhood friend/pain in the neck Cherry Sunburst.
- He and Cherry have known each other for most of their lives and dated for a while in their teens/early 20s, but he broke up with her after a while, due to seeing her more as a sister than a girlfriend... he cares a lot about her, but didn't feel right dating her. He's frequently annoyed and exasperated by Cherry, both due to her destructive antics and failure to accept that their relationship is over. He likes her as a friend, but has no desire to get back together with her and finds her constant attempts to change that incredibly annoying and off-putting.
- Somewhat self-conscious about his fur pattern; male tortoiseshells are very, very rare, and while some part of him likes being "special" and "rare", it's often outweighed by the fact that when he was little, other kids would frequently call him a girl (sometimes out of genuine confusion, more often out of deliberate malice) and tease/make fun of him for it. This is also a big part of why he dislikes his real name, Trace - being called "Tracy" gets to you after a while. (But he also just isn't too fond of his name in general.) He started going by the nickname "Tortoiseshell" fairly early on, following a suggestion Cherry made... he can't help being a tortoiseshell male, so why not just own it?
- Similarly, he's nervous and bothered about being called gay, due to being hit with a lot of homophobic insults in his school days. ("oh, he's a somewhat androgynous prettyboy with a usually-female fur pattern, obviously he's gay!") He figured out later that he's actually bisexual, but he keeps it hidden and is in denial of it; he hates feeling like his bullies were right all along and/or like he's just playing into stereotypes.
- His girlfriend is Glowstick, an alien he found soon after her unintentional arrival on this planet. They quickly fell for one another and started dating soon afterwards, and he's crazy about her, he thinks she's cool and fun. Tortoiseshell isn't entirely aware of just how obsessive Glowstick's love for him is - she's enthusiastic about everything, after all. But he doesn't mind her enthusiasm, finding it cute and endearing.
- Very close to Rosie, they're often mistaken for twins due to being close in age. He tries to keep her out of trouble and can be too much of a stereotypical overprotective big brother when she's flirting with guys - but she's similarly protective of him, so it balances out. They tease and mess with each other often, but would do anything for one another.
- Isn't bothered about the fact that he can't have kids; he's not too fond of them in general, and he's pretty sure it'd be impossible for him and Glowstick to have children even if he wasn't sterile.
