Sweetheart Lain
VirtualYears of collecting candy, all she could think about was her next victim. When she was a child she often visited the candy stores, using her hard-earned money to purchase little treats from the 5&10. Often though, no sooner would she walk out with her back of assorted candies, then a cat would come and steal it away. It didn't matter what kind, they all did: calico, orange, Tabby, and Persian. She was never safe from the cats.
On the front of her shop a sign read "No kitties here!" and she employed a guard dog for a hefty price to work as security.
Currently she was gnawing on her elastic candy necklace, her small beak hit it like an automated machine gun. In the back of her office, a shelf full of new creations and concoctions hung high above the counter. In each little cubbie, one could see wrapped taffy in a rainbow of colors, gummy creations, and fizzy candies.
And if one turned their head toward the floor, in the back corner of the shop, they would set their eyes on a large bin with a small hole on top. It seemed to be a large plastic garage can, covered by a tan plastic cover, but upon closer inspection, the aroma of sweet sugar would float in the air surrounding it.
The bird floated towards the back of Le Petite Shoppe and lifted her wing up high in order to examine the assorted candy within the large bin. A smile crossed her face as she took in the colors and swirls of sugar. After a long whiff of the the sweet smelling air that floated through the air, she picked up the large bin and flew towards a large stainless steal bowl , sitting pleasantly underneath a gigantic version of a cake mixer. The beaters aimed towards her as she trotted in, and they shined from a fresh cleaning.
On the side of the room she flipped the side of her wing across the power switch on an older Sony radio and the sound of fuzzy radio music began to play. As she continued walking, nearing the large bowl, her bony feet nearly bumped into a small brown teddy bear. It may have been better if she had seen it, for what happened next resulted in a very sticky situation.
She hopped up just enough, fluttering with her left wing, while her right held the large bin, and poured the bucket of rejected candy samples into the large mixing bowl. The radio began playing Rock-a-bye Birdy, and she tweeted along with the tune, flapping her feathered wings to the beat.
As the bowl began to warm, the smell of sugar became stronger. The warmth made her feel overly warm, and she left the room in search of a flavored freeze pop to even out her temperature.
Just as the door swung behind her, the paw of a small creature reached out from the melting candy, grasping only at the air above. The bright lights of the processing factory blinded the small animal, but the paw continued to search for something to grab on to.
The candy continued to melt and thicken into a sticky, syrupy liquid. The layer of bubbles now forming on the top of the bowl began to pop and boil. Still, the small paw continued to search. It was hard to tell who it belonged to, or what type of animal, as the outline of the animal was covered in a sweet, rainbow lava, presumably burning away.
A moment more, and the small animal may have turned into a life size jawbreaker, but the animal's paw began to recede as the pink bird returned through the doors in which she had left only moments ago.
Her eyes immediately focused on the bowl, then--noting the strange rainbow item sticking out of the bowl--dropped her freeze pop and began fluttering towards the bowl.
"Eep! No weird thingies in my candy! Peep, peep!" Her eyes twinkled, and her feathers grabbed for the long rainbow piece now sticking out of the bowl like a strange log. Her grasp was true, but soon she came tumbling down pulling the candy covered animal with her, as her wings began to become heavy from the weight of the candy now sticking to her feathers.
She took a large gasping breath, and looked towards the candy monster that bounced around awkwardly.
"No, please, no hurting!" she squeaked out, lifting her candy dipped wings above her head in defense. The candy monster seemed to understand her fear, and crouched into a sitting position as best it could.
The small bird lowered her wing and her large eyes looked back at the silhouette of a rainbow Feli, watching as its scared eyes blinked and continued staring at her.
"Candy cracks!" the bird hopped over toward the scared animal. There was no way she could pull the candy from its furry body by force!
She looked at the Feli for a few seconds longer, "I lick you!" The small bird opened her mouth and, using her minuscule-sized tongue, managed to completely eat most of the candy off of the Feli in mere minutes.
The cat purred as she was finally able to move her arms and legs once again, and the bird stepped away, realizing the danger she had now put herself in. Much to her surprise, the Feli instead turned and ran out of the room as quickly as possible, snatching her dropped teddy bear along the way.
Years afterwards, the bird had become the largest vendor of animal-shaped candies anywhere. They had turned out to be the hottest commodity since her worm-flavored gummy-worms! And no longer did she have to worry about the cats, as the Feli had made sure that no cat would ever bully her or her customers again. Sometimes she would even see the cat walking along with her teddy bear and offer her the newest creation, as a small thank you for the inspiration she gave her years before.
