Leona will tell you all about the photographs she's had published to date. None have made it into prestigious magazines and her work has never been featured on the front page of the Carnicus Tribune but she's had her name printed in more publications than anyone she knows.

To a budding photographer, that's a big deal.

She was ecstatic when she got the call informing her that she'd landed the Weatherbee Brothers Circus job. The circus has been losing money steadily to films with mind-boggling special effects and internet videos of cats being adorable. Who wants to waste five dollars on a circus ticket when you can sit at home and watch Tabby try to imitate her owner's dance moves for free?

Leona is convinced that if she can capture those rare shots that remind people how magical it was the first time they sat beneath the big top, then the crowds will set aside their screens and return to the circus, if only for an hour.

Fortunately for Fortuno the Ringmaster, his strong man took the time to earn a degree in web design. Musculo may be able to lift a small car over his head but that doesn't mean he's all brawn and no brains. He was no fool when it came to planning a secondary career option.

Leona's photos will be featured on the Weatherbee webpage once the article runs, making it all the more important that she take quality pictures. In a world of image editing software, a truly skilled artist is one that can scoff at digital enhancements.

The Tribune has agreed to feature the article in the entertainment section, sending their correspondent Lola Scoop to write down her impressions of the show.

Leona takes great care in applying her makeup. She wants to appear professional yet relaxed, especially around Lola. The journalist seems to step out of bed looking gorgeous, despite the fact that she's a year away from fifty.

Thom is in the kitchen, cooking up a hearty breakfast on Leona's stove. He serves up a stack of pancakes and scrambled eggs sprinkled with cheddar cheese, just the way she likes them. Their wedding is just over a month away. He holds her every time some ridiculous wedding crasher dream leaves her sweating in the night. She's had visions of everything from a wedding dress shrunk to doll size to a visit at the reception hall by Chubby. It doesn't matter that her grandfather's pony died nearly twenty years ago. The fuzzy brown pest has it in for all confectionery creations, from the cake at her fifth birthday party to the eighty dollar cake she designed herself.

Thom kisses her cheek every day before he leaves and tells her she will take shots to rival Ansel Adams. She tries very hard to believe him.

The clock chimes eight, bringing her to her feet. Thom holds her jacket and claims his goodbye kiss, picking up his briefcase as he heads for his own car. She tries to focus on how fun it will be to tell him about the shoot rather than giving in to her building nerves.

Lola's flashy red sports car has the top down and a classic rock station is blasting guitar riffs down the quiet lane. The most subtle feature of the woman is her neon pink lipstick.

The red and yellow stripes of the circus tent are faded and patched in many places. This is the first detail to catch Leona's eye as Lola pulls into a parking spot. Good parking is easy to find. Only a dozen slots are filled in a lot that can fit 250 cars.

The show is alright. She manages to get some impressive shots of the first acrobat act and the trick ponies. She is especially proud of capturing the mighty Lione mid-roar.

"I can see the headline now. 'Circus of Dreams Fades as Children Awake to Virtual Reality'. The only reason I took this piece was to avoid trotting through chicken barns all day." Lola falls silent as the clown car enters center stage. Leona snaps a few shots of the lead clown shaking hands with Fortuno and pulling an egg from his ear. She never has been a fan of clowns.

Lola goes for a cigarette at intermission. Leona walks in the opposite direction, as much to avoid the smell as to seek a bathroom.

She stumbles upon the cages quite by accident. She is sad to see the elephants barely have room to turn and angered by the sight of the zebra's empty water pan but it is Lione that really attracts her notice.

This is not the magnificent creature that has thrilled her since childhood. This close, she can actually count his ribs and see the disinterest in his eyes. Her own eyes follow the paw that darts out to spear a spilled piece of popcorn. Lione brings the tiny treat to his mouth and reaches for another, taking no notice of the camera's flash. Such lights have long since ceased to interest him.

He does look up at the human hand that rests on the latch of his cage. Leona is all too familiar with the sadness of feeling trapped.

She hated her little cubicle that always smelled like burritos despite her distaste for spicy foods. She hated the boss that used far too much mustache wax and made threats on her job with every minuscule typo she turned in. She especially hated the man in Office Three who looked on her like a cow he intended to purchase for his herd. She'd made the mistake of granting him one date. She could rely on him to send at least several unwanted texts a day.

She'd met Thom in the park. He'd ended his jog when he realized she was crying. He was the one who insisted she sign up for that photography class she'd always wanted to take and he'd made a gift of her camera the day after she handed in her resignation. He'd introduced her to friends at the Tribune and brought home frames so she could put prints of her favorite shots up on her apartment wall.

"Step away from there, Miss. That animal is dangerous!"

Leona came out of her daze, snatching her hand away as Fortuno made his approach. She could almost swear she heard the lion sigh.

"I'm sorry, sir. He's so magnificent. I guess I lost my head for a moment."

Fortuno's smile fell away as he noticed the camera bag on her shoulder. "I'm going to have to ask you to hand over that camera, Miss."

Leona's hand tightened on the strap. "Do you think I would want a picture of this? I'm trying to make my career, not end it." She brushed past Fortuno before he could raise a protest, spotting the sign for the restrooms at last.

She caught Lola coming out of a stall, showing her the captured shots. It was the first time she'd ever seen the woman display real emotion. "We can catch the eye of the head editor with this, Leona. You're going to make us both famous!"

Leona's photos made the front page and Fortuno's threats to sue were quickly silenced by Musculo's betrayal. The strongman put together a fundraising page for Lione, coming forward to reveal other corners cut by a ringmaster more interested in profit than performance.

Leona was there to see the lion's introduction to his new home in a wildlife sanctuary. She took Thom's hand, smiling as the mighty Lione raised his head for a roar of triumph.
